Underpaid Mail from Greece to Austria 1874: Cover from Missolonghi to Trieste franked on despatch with 1872/75 20 l. blue (3 examples) all tied by Missolonghi datestamps (March 24) in black, one stamp lifted for checking; struck with framed AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT in red as cover found to be double weight (note '2' at top in manuscript) with red PD deleted. Unfranked double letter = 50 kreuzer, less the paid amount of 60 lepta = 22 kreuzer, thus 28 kr. to pay upon receipt. The cover with overall aging and imperfections but most unusual. Underpaid Mail from Austria to Greece 1866: Cover from Trieste to Corfu franked by Austria 1863 10 kr. blue, perf. 9½, a few short perfs., tied by oval 'Triest' datestamps on despatch (Aug 23), underpaid 5 kreuzer and struck with AFFRANCATURA / INSUFFICIENTE in black with manuscript '5' in blue (kr.) below. Franked on arrival with 1862/67 5 l. green, 10 l. deep orange on very blued paper and 20 l. blue on bluish all tied by 'Kerkyra' datestamps (Aug 11, julian). An interesting method of adjusting the amount due with the original franking taken into consideration (10 kr. = 30 lepta, charged due 35 lepta for missing 5 kr. = 15 lepta), plus internal postage of 20 lepta. Slitted for disinfection on arrival in Corfu against Cholera. A few imperfections including vertical file fold through 20 lepta but a generally fine and extremely rare cover. Mail from Great Britain to Greece 1868: Cover sent unpaid from London to Patras endorsed 'via Marseille', one side flap missing, struck with London despatch datestamp (June 4), with Calais transit and struck with rare Anglo French Convention marking "F. 54" in black (Van der Linden fig. 1192) in Paris, franked on arrival with 1862/67 80 l. carmine on rose and 1871/72 10 l. orange and 20 l. deep blue tied by 'Patras' datestamps (June 1, julian) with corresponding '110' (lepta) in red crayon alongside - rate of 110 lepta for a letter under 7½ grams from France. Ironed file folds through 80 lepta but a very scarce entire.rnrnNote: A strange anomaly in rates: the 1868 cover above was charged 110 lepta via Marseilles for a letter up to 7½ grams. However, if sent via Brindisi the same letter would have been charged 90 lepta for a letter up to 10 grams.
