Steamer), franked by 1866 Dom Pedro 100 r. green tied by sunburst segmented cork handstamp in black with "Rio de Janeiro" datestamp alongside (Aug 13). Charged on arrival in blue manuscript "2/4" for a mail between 4 and 8 adarmes. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 79. "Rio de Janeiro" cds alongside (March 29) of transit. Reverse with "Ship Letter / London" cds (April 30) and further London datestamp in black, charged '6' (pence) to pay upon receipt in manuscript.     1869. Pacific Steam Navigation Company (PSNC), this famous line had advantages, having dominated Pacific Coast mail for 30 years. Calling at Bordeaux, the PSNC became an alternative to the Messageries Impériales, the RMSP and the Booth Line.rnrn1870 (Jan 16): Opened for display cover from Porto Alegre via Rio to Meta, near Naples, Italy endorsed "Italia via Southampton" at top and carried on the PSNC Steamer "Arauvania", franked at single rate with 1866 20 r. red lilac and 200 r. black in a horizontal pair tied by superb strikes of circular handsatamp in black with "Porto Alegre" despatch cds in black on obverse and thence by coastal ship to Rio de Janeiro with cds (Jan 25) in blue. Framed "P.P." in red on front showing erroneous acceptance of under-payment (rate should have been 860 reis). "Brésil / Bordeaux" entry marking (Feb 22) and charged on arrival '24' décimes in manuscript with "12" handstamp deleted. Nevertheless, on arrival in Meta (Feb 27) the cover was charged with Italy 1870 Postage Due 40 c. strip of three. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 82. Prepaid '1/8d.' in red manuscript and thence via Hamburg with City Post marking on reverse and HAMBURG two line datestamp (Jan 23) in black on obverse with '4' schilling in manuscript. Further manuscript rates on flap. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XXXVII on page 115. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XXXVII on page 117. The earliest recorded entire from Brazil to Norway.

Great Western via Southampton", franked by 18548/54 Embossed 6 d. violet in a vertical strip of four, touched to fair margins, all tied by "Manchester / 498" sideways duplexes (April 7) in black with a further complete strike on reverse. Taxed on arrival with manuscript "480" reis to pay. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 87. Lower flap missing, some wrinkles and small paper repair on the lower right corner but a very rare usage of an Embossed 6 d. multiple. The cover with pin holes at left and was probably used in evidence in a Court case or judicial document with 1869 Dom Pedro Fiscal 200 r. green & red applied and tied in manuscript in 1870. Endorsement ignored, struck with INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED as considered double rate, and sent via Calais (Nov 10) and struck in Paris with framed Convention marking "F/20" in black (Van der Linden fig. 1139). Carried on Paquebot "Rio Grande" and charged "700" reis due in blue manuscript (believed unique thus) in Rio (Dec 14) with cds of arrival. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 88.     PSNC / RMSP 1864: Cover from Mazatlan, written during the 'Maximilian' War, from the US Consulate and addressed to the US Consulate in Bahia. Carried on PSNC Steamer from Mazatlan to Panama where struck with three line dated "PANAMA / TRANSIT" (Jan 19) in black. The quickest service was to London and then South again to Brazil via the RMSP "Tamar" to St. Thomas and the "Atrato" to Southampton. In London marked with "RETURNED / FOR POSTAGE" (another strike is under the stamps with "2/11d." in manuscript) and reverse with three London datestamps (Feb 13 and Feb 15 in red). The US Embassy franked the cover with Great Britain 1858/79 2 d. blue pl. 9, 1862/64 9 d. straw and 1 s. green pl. 1 (two examples) all tied by "WC-1" obliterators. Thence by RMSP "Oneida" to Rio where charged '240' (reis) due to pay. Soiling due to journey but an extraordinary cover.

Circular "N. York Am. Pkt. / Paid" cds in red (May 9), carried on the Inman Line Steamer "Glasgow" to Liverpoool with manuscript '24' cents credit to GB in red ink, thence via Calais with "ETATS-UNIS" entry marking in red (May 24) also tying the 3 c. adhesive. Ligne du Bresil from Bordeaux carried on the Paquebot "Béarn" to Rio with arrival cds (June 18) on reverse. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 94. A delightful cover. Cert. Letter docketed internally on arrival "Cartagena de Indias Abril 1768". Extraordinarily rare - the second earliest recorded mail after the 1764 reorganisation of the Postal Regulations.     Brazilian Province of Uruguay "Cisplatina Province" 1826 (June 2): Large part cover from Montevideo to London endorsed "p. H.B.M. packet Lord Hobart" struck on despatch with straight line "MONTV.O" despatch handstamp in red (just four recorded), and struck on arrival with italic manuscript filled "4 Oz. at 14/s. per Oz" handstamp in black with the requisite charge "£ 2.16s." alongside in manuscript to pay upon receipt. London Foreign Post Office arrival on reverse (Aug 18) in black. An exceptional cover - the Brazilian fleet was blockading the River Plate whilst this letter was in transit and thereafter Falmouth Packets called at Rio de Janeiro. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 100. Rare and most attractive, an extraordinarily high rate to pay upon arrival, just four recorded outgoing covers are known mailed during the Brazilian occupation of Uruguay. Reverse with London transit cds and Chichester arrival cds (Sept 26) in black, rated at '2/7d.' to pay in manuscript (2/5 d. for the Maritime voyage + 1 d. internal charge to Bath + 1 d. Captain's gratuity). Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 101. A lovely entire.rnNote: The Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata was a five-year-long naval blockade imposed by France and Britain on the Argentine Confederation ruled by Juan Manuel de Rosas. It was imposed in 1845 to support the Colorado Party in the Uruguayan Civil War and closed Buenos Aires to naval commerce.

James St. John). Rated in manuscript upon receipt at "3/6d." due to pay (2/5d. for the Maritime rate + 1s. 1d. for Falmouth to London + 1d. Captain's fee).     Falmouth Packets 1845 (Sept 10): Entire letter, with extraordinary script inside, mailed from blockaded Montevideo to Blaye, France with faint straight line "MONTVO." handstamp in red. Carried throiugh the blockade of the combined Anglo-French Squadrons by the US Frigate "Raritan" to Rio and thence per "HMS Resistance" to Plymouth Dock. Struck with superb two line "PACKET LETTER / DEVONPORT" in black (Robertson P2), and thence via London (Dec 21) where "Colonies / &c. Art. 12" applied in red. Boulogne entry mark in red and Blaye arrival on reverse (Dec 26) where charged '20' décimes due in manuscript plus '1D' handstruck for delivery. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 102.     British Sailor's Concessionary Rate 1864: Cover franked by Great Britain 1 d. red stars, lettered AJ, used on sailor's concessionary rate cover from "Wm. Wiggett "HMS Bombay", South America" to the Sailor's father in London, correctly counter-signed by Commanding Officer below, the adhesive tied on arrival in London by obliterator with London cds on reverse (Jan 2, 1865). Sadly the "HMS Bombay" was destroyed by fire in a freak gunnery accident off Isla de Flores on December 14, 1864 about 15 days after this letter was mailed. 93 lives were lost, amongst them Attendant William Wiggett. Carried on the Ligne E Steamer "Guyane" to Fort de France with octagonal "LIGNE B / PAQ. FR. No. 4" datestamp (Nov 29) displaying well on reverse (Salles fig. 1432) and thence on the "Ville de Bordeaux", taxed on arrival with circular "1P 30" in blue.     Messageries Impériales 1877: Cover from La Guaira to to Vera Cruz, Mexico at triple rate, bearing Venezuela 1865/70 ½ r. pale claret in a vertical pair with 1873 2 r. yellow, two stained single examples with overprint inverted (Scott 19+44a) - the sole mixed issue combination usage recorded - tied by circular "CORREOS / LA GUAIRA" handstamps in black. Additionally franked by France 1870 Siège 40 c. orange, a single and horizontal strip of four, all tied by octagonal "LA GUAYRA" Consular datestamps (July 19) in black (Salles fig. 1374). Carried on the Ligne E "Cacique" to Fort de France and Ligne B "Ville de Brest" to Vera Cruz where charged at triple inland rate "75 c." due in black. Struck on reverse with circular "LIGNE L / PAQ. FR. No." datestamp (June 5) in black (Salles fig. 1617) and circular "LIGNE A / PAQ FR. No. 3" datestamp (June 9) in black (Salles fig. 1401) with Bordeaux-Irun TPO and Malaga arrival where charged "4R" due in red. One stamp with perf. fault but a very scarce usage.
