PSNC / RMSP 1864: Cover from Mazatlan, written during the 'Maximilian' War, from the US Consulate and addressed to the US Consulate in Bahia. Carried on PSNC Steamer from Mazatlan to Panama where struck with three line dated "PANAMA / TRANSIT" (Jan 19) in black. The quickest service was to London and then South again to Brazil via the RMSP "Tamar" to St. Thomas and the "Atrato" to Southampton. In London marked with "RETURNED / FOR POSTAGE" (another strike is under the stamps with "2/11d." in manuscript) and reverse with three London datestamps (Feb 13 and Feb 15 in red). The US Embassy franked the cover with Great Britain 1858/79 2 d. blue pl. 9, 1862/64 9 d. straw and 1 s. green pl. 1 (two examples) all tied by "WC-1" obliterators. Thence by RMSP "Oneida" to Rio where charged '240' (reis) due to pay. Soiling due to journey but an extraordinary cover.Starting bid : 750.00 CHFHammer price : 1,200.00 CHF
