British Sailor's Concessionary Rate 1864: Cover franked by Great Britain 1 d. red stars, lettered AJ, used on sailor's concessionary rate cover from "Wm. Wiggett "HMS Bombay", South America" to the Sailor's father in London, correctly counter-signed by Commanding Officer below, the adhesive tied on arrival in London by obliterator with London cds on reverse (Jan 2, 1865). Sadly the "HMS Bombay" was destroyed by fire in a freak gunnery accident off Isla de Flores on December 14, 1864 about 15 days after this letter was mailed. 93 lives were lost, amongst them Attendant William Wiggett.
