Recess by Perkins Bacon 1859 (April 23): 9 d. purple-brown on white paper, wmk. Star, imperforate, the wonderful unused example of fresh vibrant colour with fine even margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp at base, merest hint of horizontal bend at base in no way detracting from the lovely appearance of this famous stamp; fresh and extremely fine, trivial age spot on otherwise superb large part og. A spectacular example of an immensely rare stamp. Patrick C. Pearson in his London Philatelist 1984/87 series of articles "Ceylon 'Pence' Rarities - Where are they now?" stated less than 20 unused stamps recorded! Signed Georg Bühler. Certs. Star, imperforate, the spectacular unused block of thirty-four and a single example (position 36), from the top of the sheet and showing the full sheet corner margins, of fabulous fresh colour witth a yelllowish tinge, generally large margins all round, slight scissor cut affects position 23 at base, of no significance, with this multiple demonstrating the misalignment between the stamps exceptionally well; one or two wrinkles on large part or unmounted og. The largest recorded multiple of this stamp (the Boucher, Burrus, 'Serendib', Hackmey block was of sixteen subjects, the Agabeg block was of twelve); this item never offered on the open market in the last 35 years; a truly fabulous Exhibition piece.rnrnProvenance: Collection Baron Anthony de Worms, Harmers, London, 20-23 June 1938, lot 106.rn                   Purchased privately November 1986.rn

Wreck Mail 1862: Cover from Galle to London endorsed "via Southampton", carried on P.& O. Steamer ‘Colombo', with "GALLE / POST PAID" despatch cds in red (Nov 6), overstruck by fine strike of framed "Saved from the wreck of / the Colombo" in black. The adhesive floated off due to the wreck, with 'London EC / Paid' cds of receipt (Jan 1, 1863) in red below. Condition much above average for these submerged covers, a scarce and most attractive example.rnrnNote: The 'Colombo' was en route from Australia to England and foundered off Minicoy Island, the most southern of the Laccadives in the Indian Ocean, three hundred miles due west of the southern tip of India on November 19 in a monsoon. The ship was flooded, but all the passengers were safely transferred by lifeboats to the island. The passengers and mail were all rescued by the ‘Ottawa’ on November 30. The boxes of mail were recovered by divers. This is the first recorded cachet applied to Australasian wreck mail.
