    Recess by Perkins Bacon 1859: 6 d. purple-brown on white paper, wmk. Star, imperforate, a used example on 1859 single rate cover to London endorsed 'via Southampton', three good margins but just shaved at base, neatly tied by barred obliterator in black. Reverse with "COLOMBO / STEAMER LETTER" despatch in red (Jan 15) and front showing 'Paid / London' arrival cds (Feb 15). Almost certainly the earliest recorded usage of this stamp on letter, Gibbons list the issue date as '1859'. A scarce and attractive cover.
