    1872: De La Rue artist's composite Essay for the 96 c. value (issued in drab), imperforate on thick card with head-plate in pale rose taken from the 1867 De La Rue 3 d., the surround hand-painted in deep carmine and Chinese white, the oval with "Ceylon Postage" and "Ninety Six Cents" hand-painted in deep rose on white over pencil. Reverse signed "A.M.D. No. 21" in ink. Slight surface rub but exquisite and unique.rnrnProvenance: Christie's, London, 12 Dec 1994, ex lot 327.
