Rhône" and "via Southampton", franked by Great Britain 1858/59 2 d. blue pl. 9 horizontal pair and 1865 1 s. green pl. 4 tied by "C81" obliterators with "BAHIA" double arc despatch cds alongside in black (Nov 11). 'London / Paid' transit cds (Nov 30) in red and Calais entry marking of the same day also tying the adhesives. Small smudge at lower left but a rare and important entire - the earliest known stamped usage from Bahia (see Parmenter page 8/15). "Rio de Janeiro" cds alongside (March 29) of transit. Reverse with "Ship Letter / London" cds (April 30) and further London datestamp in black, charged '6' (pence) to pay upon receipt in manuscript. 1869. Pacific Steam Navigation Company (PSNC), this famous line had advantages, having dominated Pacific Coast mail for 30 years. Calling at Bordeaux, the PSNC became an alternative to the Messageries Impériales, the RMSP and the Booth Line.rnrn1870 (Jan 16): Opened for display cover from Porto Alegre via Rio to Meta, near Naples, Italy endorsed "Italia via Southampton" at top and carried on the PSNC Steamer "Arauvania", franked at single rate with 1866 20 r. red lilac and 200 r. black in a horizontal pair tied by superb strikes of circular handsatamp in black with "Porto Alegre" despatch cds in black on obverse and thence by coastal ship to Rio de Janeiro with cds (Jan 25) in blue. Framed "P.P." in red on front showing erroneous acceptance of under-payment (rate should have been 860 reis). "Brésil / Bordeaux" entry marking (Feb 22) and charged on arrival '24' décimes in manuscript with "12" handstamp deleted. Nevertheless, on arrival in Meta (Feb 27) the cover was charged with Italy 1870 Postage Due 40 c. strip of three. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 82. Prepaid '1/8d.' in red manuscript and thence via Hamburg with City Post marking on reverse and HAMBURG two line datestamp (Jan 23) in black on obverse with '4' schilling in manuscript. 1844 (April 14): Entire letter from Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais to Throndheim, Norway carried as a Consignee's letter to Forwarding Agent in Altona (address deleted in transit), mailed from Altona with datestamp in black on reverse and "SCHIFFS BRIEF / HAMBURG" datestamp in black (July 17) with a variety of manuscript rates alongside the two datestamps. Great Western via Southampton", franked by 18548/54 Embossed 6 d. violet in a vertical strip of four, touched to fair margins, all tied by "Manchester / 498" sideways duplexes (April 7) in black with a further complete strike on reverse. Struck with framed "F/17" Convention handstamp in black (Van der Linden fig. 1133) and annotated for double rate and struck with framed AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT in red. "LIGNE J / PAQ. FR. No. 4" datestamp in black below (Aug 20) and reverse with Pernambuco arrfival cds (Sept 7). Taxed "640" reis in blue crayon which has folded the lower left corner of the 5 c. adhesive, the cover without side flaps but nevertheless a most unusual usage. PSNC / RMSP 1864: Cover from Mazatlan, written during the 'Maximilian' War, from the US Consulate and addressed to the US Consulate in Bahia. Carried on PSNC Steamer from Mazatlan to Panama where struck with three line dated "PANAMA / TRANSIT" (Jan 19) in black. The quickest service was to London and then South again to Brazil via the RMSP "Tamar" to St. Thomas and the "Atrato" to Southampton. In London marked with "RETURNED / FOR POSTAGE" (another strike is under the stamps with "2/11d." in manuscript) and reverse with three London datestamps (Feb 13 and Feb 15 in red). The US Embassy franked the cover with Great Britain 1858/79 2 d. blue pl. 9, 1862/64 9 d. straw and 1 s. green pl. 1 (two examples) all tied by "WC-1" obliterators. 'London / Paid' transit in red (Aug 30) and carried by L&H Steamer "Olber" to Bahia in error with Brazilian Bahia arrival (Sept 19) and British P.O. cds on obverse (Sept 21). Mailed back to destination on L&H Steamer "Ticho Brahe" to Lisbon with reverse showing "Por Transatlantico" cds (Oct 8), where charged '80' reis due in black. RMSP 1856 (June 4): Entire letter from Neuchâtel to Rio de Janeiro, endorsed "via Southampton", franked by Strubel 1 fr. violet grey, 10 rp. blue and 20 rp. orange, all three adhesives touched or shaved, tied by mute lozenge of Neuchâtel (AW 52) with "NEUCHATEL en Suisse 4 Juin 1856" despatch cds in blue, framed "P.D." in blue, French "SUISSE 6 JUIN 56 PONTARLIER" entry cds in red and London transit cds in red (June 7) alongside. Reverse with Paris - Calais Ambulant cds. Cover transported from Southampton to Rio with RMSP steamer "Avon". The inland due of 240 reis is not shown. Some cover toning and vertical and horizontal file folds resulting in a crease well away from the stamp, in spite of this an extremely rare destination, correctly franked in the December 1854 rate from the first Swiss rayon via Great Britain to the desembarkation port, valued at 13 out of 13 points in Schäfer. Eine sehr seltene Destination aus der Strubelzeit, korrekt frankiert im Tarif von Dezember 1854 für einen Brief aus dem ersten schweizer Briefkreis über England bis zum Ausschiffungshafen, bewertet mit 13 von 13 möglichen Seltenheitspunkten in Schäfer - Auslandsdestinationen. RMSP / PSNC 1872 (Dec 9): Cover from Halle to Rio de Janeiro, endorsed "via England", franked by Empire Small Shield ¼ gr. violet and 5 gr. ochre in a horizontal pair in a combination franking with Large Shield ½ gr. orange and 1 gr. carmine, tied by "HALLE A/S. 9 12 1-2." despatch cds in black with framed "P.P." in red and 'London / Paid' transit cds (Dec 11) in red alongside. Cover transported from Liverpool to Rio with PSNC steamer 'Edinburgh Castle'. Front shows "11¾" (gr.) rate, "11" (d.) debited from the British to the German Post and "240" (reis) due. Adhesives with perforation irregularities due to their proximity to the cover's edge, nevertheless an attractive and correctly rated four colour franking, illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 91. British Sailor's Concessionary Rate 1864: Cover franked by Great Britain 1 d. red stars, lettered AJ, used on sailor's concessionary rate cover from "Wm. Wiggett "HMS Bombay", South America" to the Sailor's father in London, correctly counter-signed by Commanding Officer below, the adhesive tied on arrival in London by obliterator with London cds on reverse (Jan 2, 1865). Sadly the "HMS Bombay" was destroyed by fire in a freak gunnery accident off Isla de Flores on December 14, 1864 about 15 days after this letter was mailed. 93 lives were lost, amongst them Attendant William Wiggett.
