1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond HillrnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the „specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents.rnFrom Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd. (1998).rnrn1861 (June 3): 3 d. rose, no wmk., rough perf. 14-16, imperforate at right, boldly struck with CANCELLED obliterator in black, position 3 in the Jaffé reconstructed block of six adjoining the ex Messenger and Hackmey example, but not recorded or illustrated in that superb handbook. Delightful appearance and very rare: just three examples are recorded, one of which is housed in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Gi = £ 10'000.

Rough perforation 14 to 16 1861/70: 1 s. blue, Error of Colour, rough perforation 14 to 16, an unused example of this famous stamp, centred to base showing portion of the adjoining stamp, infintessimal trace of aging but of fine fresh colour, unused without gum. A world rarity with just nine examples believed to exist, one of which is in the Tapling collection at the British Library and another is housed in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A wonderful stamp. Signed R. Goebel. Cert. RPSL (1984) Gi = £ 18'000.rnNote: All of the 'unused' examples were manuscript cancelled by the Colonial Secretary with a pen cross to prevent re-use and the pen crosses have in most cases been removed since. The Colonial Secretary, Jas. R. Holligan, stated in a letter to Perkins Bacon (Sept 25, 1863) "only a few having been disposed of for a postage label album".rnProvenance: Collection Hodsell Hurlock, Harmers, London, 16-24 June 1958, lot 296. This being the finer of the two examples in the Hurlock collection, the other (lot 297) was also in the Lickfold, Leslie Wheeler and Joseph Hackmey collections and is illustrated in 'The Stamps of Barbados' by Edmund Bayley on page 43. Prepared for use but not Issued 1921: 'Abolition of Slavery 1st August 1838' 6 d. red & dull blue-green, wmk. Multiple Crown CA upright, the magnificent unused example, corner marginal from upper left of the sheet, of fabulous fresh colour, wrinkles on full unmounted og. A truly wonderful and iconic stamp of the utmost rarity - this stamp being the sole example in private hands Gi = £ 60'000.rnNote: The stamp was never issued due to the contentious political nature of the subject. Whilst two blocks of four of the wmk. Multiple Script CA stamps were retained, all the others were burnt. One block was split up (a single corner example from upper right of sheet was in the Byron R. Cameron collection, lot 218) and the second block of four from lower right of the sheet remains intact and resides in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Multiple Crown CA example was possibly retained by the Governor or the Head Postmaster of Jamaica and remains unique. The stamp offered here is an entirely unique world-wide rarity.rnProvenance: Collection Lawrence Kimball, Harmers, London, 26/27 March 1962, lot 381; Spink, London, 12-13 April 2007, lot 1209, where erroneously described as having Multiple Script CA Watermark.  rnrnrn

Rough perforation 14 to 16 1861/70: (½ d.) grass-green, Plate II, rough perforation 14 to 16, an unused block of twenty, marginal from top of sheet, variety "Imperforate", imperceptibly touched at base with large margins on three sides, with centre line in margin at top, fresh and very fine but for horizontal crease through the third row not detracting from the appearance, unused without gum. Illustrated in 'The Stamps of Barbados' by Edmund Bayley on colour plate IV. A remarkable block of fabulous colour and truly stunning appearance, this being the largest multiple of the grass-green imperforate Gi = £ 8'500+.rnProvenance: Collection Major T. Bayley, Harmers, London, 24 Oct 1990, lot 557.rnrnNote: The Edmund Bayley collection, sold in 1990, was unfortunately collected in Barbados and became subjected to a degree of tropicalisation, thus the gum, always slightly browned in the first instance with this variety, has sensibly been removed from this multiple to avoid deterioration.

Extremely rare Gi = £ 22'000.rnNote: The Dale-Lichtenstein collection possesseed two blocks of four and a marginal pair of this variety (lots 634-636). In the sale catalogue, Sidney Barrett of the Economist Stamp Co. stated that, from the original sheet of 60, 42 examples were sold as singles and the remaining eighteen from the three left hand rows were saved - this leaves nine pairs of which Dale-Lichtenstein owned five.
