1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond HillrnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents.rnFrom Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd. 1907: 2 d. dull and bright purple and 4 d. grey-green & black, wmk. Multiple Crown CA on chalk surfaced paper, unused examples of these great rarities, prepared but unissued due to the name change from British Central Africa to Nyasaland Protectorate, each of fresh colour and fine, if slightly aged, large part og., sold together with the somewhat less valuable 1 d. and 6 d. values from the set. Delightful and extraordinarily rare "it is estimated that no more than a dozen examples of each remain in collector's hands" - Stanley Gibbons. Signed A. Diena. Cert. A. Diena (1974) Gi = £ 38'000.rnrnNote: 18 examples of each stamp reached the philatelic market, a block of ten (since divided), a block of four housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III, a pair and two single examples. Single sets are also to be found in the Royal Collection and in the British Library Collection. This leaves a dozen sets as SG state in the British Commonwealth catalogue.

Mombasa Provisionals 1891 (Jan): Provisional "½ Anna" handstamped surcharge in dull violet on 2 a. vermilion, watermarked, a used example, variety "Original Face Value Not Obliterated", countersigned "AD" (Andrew Dick, chief accountant of the Imperial British East Africa Co.) in black ink at Mombasa, of fine colour and superb appearance, lightly cancelled by MOMBASA circular datestamp (June 1891) in black with blue crayon line typical of a usage from the C.M.S. Mission at Freretown. The surcharge was normally applied over the vignette and a horizontal ink line drawn through the value at base. The surcharge having been applied too low, it is presumed the clerk charged with the application of obliterating the previous value believed there was no space to do so. There were six different despatches of various values from Brabdury Wilkinson, each probably representing a seperate printing, however only five values had more than one printing: ½ a., 2½ a. (three printings), 1 a., 3 a. and 4½ a. (two printings). The printings of October 1890, Feb 1891 and July 1891 were on thin paper with a central papermaker's watermark and had a close imperforate edge to the sheet. The sheets comprised 560 stamps (10 x 6) so that 24 stamps of the early printings have one edge imperforate and 4 have two adjacent edges imperforate.
