Losnr. 6347 - 291.-297. Auktion

  • Losnr. : 6347 Brit. Ostafrika

Mombasa Provisionals 1891 (Jan): Provisional "½ Anna" handstamped surcharge in dull violet on 2 a. vermilion, watermarked, a used example, variety "Original Face Value Not Obliterated", countersigned "AD" (Andrew Dick, chief accountant of the Imperial British East Africa Co.) in black ink at Mombasa, of fine colour and superb appearance, lightly cancelled by MOMBASA circular datestamp (June 1891) in black with blue crayon line typical of a usage from the C.M.S. Mission at Freretown. The surcharge was normally applied over the vignette and a horizontal ink line drawn through the value at base. The surcharge having been applied too low, it is presumed the clerk charged with the application of obliterating the previous value believed there was no space to do so. An outstanding example of an exceedingly rare stamp: one of just 5 examples recorded. Signed Herbert Bloch Gi = £ 3'750. rnrnProvenance: Collection John Minns, Sotheby's, London, 25-25 April 2001, lot 60.
