RMSP/PSNC 1871 (Sept 28): Triple rate Cover from Mannheim to Lima, Peru endorsed "Royal Engl. West India Mail / via Ostende & Southampton" franked by Baden 1862/66 30 kr. yellow orange, two singles and a vertical strip of three, single 9 kr. reddish brown on front as well as 1864 9 kr. pale brown, 1868 1 kr. green and 1868 7 kr. blue on reverse, a mixed issue five colour franking, all tied by "MANNHEIM 28 SEP. 10-12 M" despatch, boxed "P.P." handstamp in red alongside. Reverse with LIMA arrival cds (Nov 1, 1871). RMSP steamer 'Nile' from Southampton to Colon, PSNC steamer from Panama to Callao. Accountancy markings in red crayon were erased, part of the cover at top right was supplemented, the endorsement was redrawn in this position, presumably an additional 1 kreuzer stamp was located there. The strip of three 30 kreuzer adhesives shows some perforation split, one 9 kr. stamp is glued around the cover corner, however for a franking of that sheer size it is of a very attractive appearance. The '3' in red crayon for the third weight rate is still lightly visible at the right of the 9 kr. stamp, the franking should have been three times 59 kr., thus the cover is underfranked by one kreuzer. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 225. In spite of its imperfections, a most impressive Shipmail cover from the well-known Cohen correspondence and a rarity of Baden postal history.
