    Correos Mayores de Indias / Postmasters of the Indies 1601 (September 14): Entire letter from Cartagena, clearly dated three times inside, addressed to the rector of the Inquisition in Lima, Peru. In wonderful fresh condititon for a letter of this age and having travelled a distance of some 4'800 kms. (866 leagues) from Cartagena via Quito to Lima in approximately 75 days journey. A rare and extraordinarily early entire for any Exhibit of early Colonial postal history.
    Note: The letter was sent during the term of Office of the fourth Postmaster of the Indies, Diego de Carvajal Vargas y Ortiz, Postmaster from 1593 until his death in 1631.

    1770-1810: Royal Mail, Province of Santa Fé & Bogotá. 1795 (April 27): Way Bill for a registered letter, seemingly sent unpaid and therefore contrary to regulations, headed "Certificado" at upper left and clearly dated at top alongside fine strike of NUEVA GRANADA (Tizon 7 = EXT) in red. Reverse with weak strike of DEVE mark again in red. The registration fees for letters of up to one ounce within the Province were 3 reales, within the Viceroyalty, 5 reales. A rare document and very probably the item noted by Manuel Tizon for his listing.

Whilst undated, the cover is addressed to Camilo Torres whilst a lawyer for the State, as he started to fight for Independence in 1809 or 1810, the cover must have been mailed prior to this date. Rated "5" reales in manuscript for a double letter under ¾ ounce in weight. Exceptional strike of the patriotic handstamp-applied in support of Spain's King then imprisoned in France. Ironically, the addresse Camilo Torres was to join the Revoloutionary Forces later in 1809 and was shot in 1816.

Without postal markings, but interesting letter in English: "Dear Bob, If this finds you at Corn Islands you will of course see what I write to Capt. Rose or any other Captain that may come there on my account. I am now going to Guatemala on a very good footing, and in a very few months shall be at the above Islands where I think you had better stay and receive some Robinson Crusoe education till you hear from me again. You will of course take under your care all our property, Negroes etc., that is on the Islands...The negro woman Nancy will show you two papers she has got and will tell you the characters of anybody almost that comes her way. You may be sure of better days...Chagres Dec 1, 1790". An extraordinary entire and the earliest known from Chagres.

    Note: On August 28, 1861 Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera altered the existing postal rates by memorandum. He ordered that the internal Colombian postal rates of April 1846 be re-introduced, namely 10 centavos for an inter-state letter and 15 centavos from one state to another. Only four letters are known sent during the four month period between August and December 1861, a new organisation being implemented on January 1, 1862.
