Lot# 4265 - 177-180 Auction

  • Lot# : 4265 Colombia

1809 (June 30): Entire letter from Panama to Santa Fé de Bogotá via Cartagena, distance 366 leagues / 2'040 kms., addressed to Camilo Torres, the entire struck with fine but oily PANAMÁ handstamp (Tizon 2 = RR) and, above, patriotic handstamp VYVA FERNANDO 7 in red (Tizon 3 = EXT). Rated "5" reales in manuscript for a double letter under ¾ ounce in weight. Exceptional strike of the patriotic handstamp-applied in support of Spain's King then imprisoned in France. Ironically, the addresse Camilo Torres was to join the Revoloutionary Forces later in 1809 and was shot in 1816.
