Correos Mayores de Indias / Postmasters of the Indies 1601 (September 14): Entire letter from Cartagena, clearly dated three times inside, addressed to the rector of the Inquisition in Lima, Peru. In wonderful fresh condititon for a letter of this age and having travelled a distance of some 4'800 kms. (866 leagues) from Cartagena via Quito to Lima in approximately 75 days journey. A rare and extraordinarily early entire for any Exhibit of early Colonial postal history.
Note: The letter was sent during the term of Office of the fourth Postmaster of the Indies, Diego de Carvajal Vargas y Ortiz, Postmaster from 1593 until his death in 1631.Starting bid : 1,000 CHFHammer price : 3,400 CHF -
