20 c. red and 5 c. buff used on the famous large part 1861 entire letter from Bogotá addressed to the Apostolic Nunciature in Madrid, prepaid to Cartagena and franked at double rate for the charge from one state to another, the 5 c. buff (position 23) with large margins all round and the 20 c. clear to large all round, tied by pearled BOGOTÁ handstamp in black and, on arrival, by Spanish "12 Rs." due marking in blue. British P.O. CARTAGENA datestamp of transit at left (Dec 3) being a mirror image from the cover above. One flap missing but a fantastic cover, one of just two known addressed to an overseas destination franked by the 1861 issue and the sole recorded combination usage of the 20 centavos on letter. Cert. Moorhouse (2012).

Position 40 in the strip of six shows the major retouch "redrawn background lines above the value". One or two minor vertical creases of no importance as this exceptional piece bears the largest known used multiple of the 20 centavos in the strip of six besides showing a rare mixed issue franking. A wonderful and colourful Exhibition piece for the connoisseur. Unique. Cert. Moorhouse (2012).

    Lot# : 4370 Colombia

1 peso pink, the famous "Laarsen Stone" showing all 54 positions on the sheet of 54 subjects (9x6) on album page, it is believed by students that only about half of Laarsen's configuration is correct, however all 54 stamps are different in type as the 1 peso stone was adapted from the stone of the 2½ centavos value. The reconstruction shows 11 unused stamps including a pair, a top marginal used pair and six further marginal stamps, most being with manuscript cancellations although 11 bear handstamps. Condition is obviously variable but a wonderful and renowned plating study of immaculate provenance. An extraordinary showpiece.
Provenance: Collection Laarsen, Corinphila sale 47 (Dec 1960), lot 3715; Hubbard (Nov 1984), lot 114; Londoño de Tamayo, Corinphila sale 90 (Oct 1994), lot 6669.
