    Wreck Mail 1862: Cover from Galle to London endorsed "via Southampton", carried on P.& O. Steamer ‘Colombo', with "GALLE / POST PAID" despatch cds in red (Nov 6), overstruck by fine strike of framed "Saved from the wreck of / the Colombo" in black. The adhesive floated off due to the wreck, with 'London EC / Paid' cds of receipt (Jan 1, 1863) in red below. Condition much above average for these submerged covers, a scarce and most attractive example.rnrnNote: The 'Colombo' was en route from Australia to England and foundered off Minicoy Island, the most southern of the Laccadives in the Indian Ocean, three hundred miles due west of the southern tip of India on November 19 in a monsoon. The ship was flooded, but all the passengers were safely transferred by lifeboats to the island. The passengers and mail were all rescued by the ‘Ottawa’ on November 30. The boxes of mail were recovered by divers. This is the first recorded cachet applied to Australasian wreck mail.

Star, imperforate, the spectacular unused block of thirty-four and a single example (position 36), from the top of the sheet and showing the full sheet corner margins, of fabulous fresh colour witth a yelllowish tinge, generally large margins all round, slight scissor cut affects position 23 at base, of no significance, with this multiple demonstrating the misalignment between the stamps exceptionally well; one or two wrinkles on large part or unmounted og. Star, imperforate, the extraordinary used block of twenty (4 x 5), marginal from left of sheet, just touched to large margins all round with surprisingly light cancellations in black; of fine colour but the edges with six small inclusioned tears not greatly detracting from the beauty of the largest known used multiple of this stamp (the second largest was ex Burrus and is a block of sixteen). Sold together with a 1954 letter from Cyril Harmer in London to the owner "your block, despite its defects, which do not seem to be very serious, is certainly a most fantastic piece". Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond HillrnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property.
