    10 pa. brown, Type II, used on 1867 local cover within Cairo, correctly pre-paying the Printed Matter rate, tied by POSTE VICE REALI EGIZIANE / CAIRO datestamp in blue (Feb 6). Struck on despatch with framed AFFRANCATURA / INSUFFICIENTE also in blue with manuscript '1.30' above (1 piastre 30 paras, the amount due for a single letter, less the pre-payment). The marking and charge deleted in manuscipt as the letter was, indeed, correctly franked. Creases to stamp and cover but extremely rare, as far as this describer is aware just one other similar cover known.

    20 pa. blue, a vertical strip of three, heavily toned perforations, used on double weight 1866 cover to Alexandria tied by POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE / CAIRO datestamps in black (March 25), with repeated strike at left. The cover was underpaid by 20 paras and struck with framed AFFRANCATURA / INSUFFICIENTE handstamp in black and charged '2½' (piastres) due in manuscript - taxed double (4 pi.) less the amount paid (1½ pi.) = 2½ pi. to pay. Reverse with Alexandria arrival cds (same day). The stamps were originally cut out on piece but re-affixed, however, despite faults, a remarkable usage.

    20 pa. blue, perf. 12½, a fine example used on southbound cover from Cairo to Assiut, cancelled by POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE / CAIRO datestamp in black. Whilst the single rate was normally 1 piastre between any of the 16 or so Vice-Royal Post Offices open in Egypt at the time, mail to towns on the Nile in Upper Egypt was charged according to distance in weight stages of 1 dirhem = approximately 3 grams, and was conveyed by the Mohammed Ali State Courier Post.

Single rate postage 1 pi. + 2 piastres for registration. The adhesives with small imperfections as usual, but a magnificent and rare cover, the use of the 20 paras due to the shortage of the 1 piastre adhesive in the last week of sale.     1 pi. claret, perf. 12½, corner block of 20 from lower right corner of the second pane, positions 136-140/156-160/176-180/196-200; with pos. 140 showing broken frame and white flaw at base, pos. 198 showing damage to pearls at bottom left and on left frameline, pos. 199 with 'sad' broken in overprint; of good centering and colour, showing marginal inscription PIASTRE 1 at right and MINISTERO at base, tone spots affecting the front and reverse, but with large part original gum. One of the largest blocks known of the first issue, just one larger block (of 53, ex Byam, Mishrick, Antonini, Fikry, now in the Todd collection) exists, this being the largest corner block known. Transferred to the Egyptian P.O. for onward transmission by the British Consul in Suez and franked by 1866 1 pi. claret tied by bold POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE / SUEZ datestamp (May 21) in black with repeated strike alongside. A splendid and extremely rare usage with just four or five combination covers known from this correspondence of which only two, perhaps three, are in such fine quality.

The cover, correctly rated at 10 piastres for 20 grams, appears not to have travelled via French Packet but instead picked up a Spanish ship presumably going direct to Barcelona where charged '46' centimos in crayon. Cover tear on front and part flap missing on opening, however Spain is a very rare destination for classic Egypt covers and the 5 piastres is a very rare stamp on letter.
