Lot# 5187 - 196-201 Auction

  • Lot# : 5187 Egypt Kingdom

5 piastres brown, two examples used on 1869 cover from Ismailiah on the Suez Canal to Madrid, left hand stamp with contemporary fault, tied by V. R. POSTE EGIZIANE / ISMAILIA cds's (Dec 7). Italic 'Franca' at right applied in Egypt and red 'PD'. The reverse with Alexandria cds (Dec 8) of transit and Madrid arrival cds in red. The cover, correctly rated at 10 piastres for 20 grams, appears not to have travelled via French Packet but instead picked up a Spanish ship presumably going direct to Barcelona where charged '46' centimos in crayon. Cover tear on front and part flap missing on opening, however Spain is a very rare destination for classic Egypt covers and the 5 piastres is a very rare stamp on letter.
