"OUTREMER / PARIS" entry marking (1 July 1873) in blue and aging and file folds; however the letter should have been struck with handstruck '8' décimes handstamp: 1st July 1873 being the first day of the new reduced rate by private ships: 8 décimes for 10 grams.

Carried on the "Avoca" to Galle, the "Hindostan" to Alexandria and from there on the "Nyanza" to Brindisi. Mailed by the newly opened Brindisi route with circular entry mark in red (July 9). Charged with handstruck '15' décimes due for single rate: tariff of 1 July 1871. A most attractive cover, unrecorded in the Palmer Census.rn

Reverse with British P.O. "RIO-JANEIRO" cds of transit (Aug 7) in black and London cds (Sept 3) in red. Struck there with "GB / 1F 60c." accountancy marking in black somewhat overstruck by Calais (Sept 4) entry marking. Charged '8' décimes due in manuscript on arrival. A wonderful entire of the greatest scarcity.

(Transit sarde) handstamp in black alongside. Reverse with MARSEILLE transit and MONTPELLIER arrival (July 24) cds's. Taxed with '10' décimes, the full rate in the tariff of July 1851, as the partial prepayment with the adhesive was neglected. A decorative and appealing entire. Cert. Carried via French route with "SAVANILLA" Consular datestamp (Jan 2, 1881) in black (Salles fig. 1378) and reverse with circular "LIGNE A / PAQ. FR. No. 2" datestamp (Jan 4) and carried on the "St. Germain" to St. Nazaire. Triangular 'T' marking and charged with handstruck '12' décimes due upon arrival. A few file folds not detracting from the appearance, a very early usage of this adhesive.

    Antilles 1896: Haiti 2 c. red-brown, five examples including a strip of three, used on 1897 cover to Bordeaux endorsed "par S.S. Prins Willem IV, via New York", with triangular "T" mark in black below. Found to be double weight, original franking ignored and taxed at double deficiency with Postage Due 50 c. lilac-brown in an interpanneau pair (Jan 10, 1898); together with an entirely underpaid 1891 single rate cover sent stampless to Paris from Port au Prince (June 1) taxed on arrival with 10 c. black (2) and 30 c. black on arrival (June 17). Minor imperfections but a scarce pair.

    French P.O. in Tunesia 1886 (Sept 3): Envelope from the French consulate in Livorno to Tunis, bearing Italy Umberto 1879 20 c. orange (Sassone 39) tied by LIVORNO despatch cds (error in month slug), reverse with CAGLIARI transit (Sept 4) and arrival (Sept 6) cds's of the Italian and French P.O. in Tunis. Taxed at the French P.O. with an exceptional usage of the French type Duval timbre taxe 10 c. black (YT TT10), tied by "TUNIS TUNESIE 7 SEPT. 86" cds. The Italian definitive with some wrinkles due as it was sticked unevenly to the cover, nevertheless a very early usage, maybe a unique usage of the French due in Tunesia prior to the issuance of Tunis definitives and due two years later.

    1884/90: Cape 2 d. bistre, three examples used on 1887 cover to Paris, tied by "524" numeral obliterators with ALIWAL NORTH datestamp of despatch at left (Feb 20), the stamps also teid by unframed "T" mark in black. Correctly franked for Great Britain but underpaid for France. 'Calais a Paris' cds on obverse (March 23), the cover was presented to the addressee on three occasions, each time with 1893 1 fr. lilac on pale yellow (Maury T40), each time cancelled by triangular handstamp in black. Small closed opening tears at top but very scarce.

The cover sealed at left with margins used as tape, and was presented ten times for the taxable amount (myriad datestamps on reverse) with Duval Postage Due 1881 50 c. black (Maury T20) handstamped and pen-cancelled. Reverse with Alexandrie cds (July 4) and Bordeaux arrival (July 12). a rare usage of this issue in Cairo and an attractive cover.

    Germany Empire 1894 (July 19): Large sized envelope from Fürstenstein to Paris, bearing 1889 Krone & Wertziffer 20 pf. blue with good perfs, tied by FÜRSTENSTEIN despatch cds in black. Upon arrival taxed as a letter of the 16th weight rate with twice the insufficiency using Van Dyck 1 fr. brown (two pairs and three single adhesives) plus one single Duval 50 c. black. Cover with some tear and wear as to be expected from an item of that sheer size, nevertheless an amazing timbre taxe franking Maury 25+20.

    Norddeutscher Postbezirk 1871 (Feb 2): Entire letter from Suhl to Paris, bearing 1869 ½ gr. orange and 2 gr. blue (2) with primarily good perfs, one adhesive separated with scissor cut, tied by clear SUHL despatch cds in black. Interesting cover which made its journey from Suhl with the German Imperial and Fieldpost to the exchange P.O. in Versailles on its way to Paris. Therefore it does not have any French datestamps. Although correctly franked with 4½ gr., it was taxed in Paris with '2' décimes, a procedure which was only in use for mail from the occupied parts of France, not for the German Empire proper.
