The cover was mailed via England with 'Calais a Paris' cds at left (July 25) and thrice readdressed: from Bordeaux to Libourne and thence to Coichet and St. Savinien (July 29); accumulating three 1881/92 Postage Due 10 c. black & 40 c. black (Maury T15+T19); two of which were annulled in pen when forwarded. A most unusual cover.

Two strikes of framed "Naeget Mediagelse / Refusé" handstamps in violet and obverse with RETUR. The letter was returned to sender where taxed with France Postage Due 1893 10 c. brown pair and 30 c. carmine tied by Millau cds's (June 11). Edge wear to envelope but unusual.

PARIS" entry cds in blue, framed "aus dem Briefkasten" and "Unzureichend frankirt" handstamps in black alongside. Underpaid as a second rate letter, therefore taxed with '9' décimes. Light horizontal file fold, nevertheless an interesting and appealing entire.

France, whilst a signatory, did not join the UPU until 1 Jan 1876.

    Switzerland 1857 (July 20): Wrapper with complete journal from Lugano to Marseille, bearing Strubel 5 rp. brown, a fresh example with good to huge margins, tied by light LUGANO despatch cds, "PD." in oval and French "SUISSE St. LOUIS" entry (July 22) cds in red alongside. Reverse with Mulhouse transit and Marseille arrival (July 24) cds's. Correctly franked with 5 rp. for printed matter abroad, the '3' décimes is not a postal but a fiscal taxation imposed on foreign journals.

Thence via Halifax and St. John's and struck with "MORE-TO-PAY 5" in blue, deleted on arrival in St. Pierre (April 5) with '6' in manuscript due. A marvellous cover to a most unusual destination.
