A magnificent cover, the highest franking of the 50 bani with beard and with the unique usage of three 50 b. from the Emergency issue on letter and used just eight days after the 10 b. and 50 b. stamps were issued - the earliest recorded usage on letter and the undoubted highlight of the King Carol issues on letter. 1869: 10 bani blue, a fine used example (Transfer Type 2), tied by CALAFATUL datestamp (16/1) in green (Kiriac fig. 341) to 1871 entire letter from Calafat to Braila (Faranga correspondence), not sent by DDSG ship down the Danube but travelling via land. Reverse with CRAIOVA cds (17/1) in green (Kiriac fig. 386), 'BUCURESCI DUP'AMIADI datestamp (20/1) in black (Kiriac fig. 433) and Braila cds of receipt (21/1). A few imperfections on reverse but a fine and very rare entire.rnNote: In this and past Romania sales at Corinphila, we have discussed the DDSG ship covers from the Faranga correspondence between Calafat and Braila and attention is drawn to the Gabriel Sassower articles in the London Philatelist on the subject. This is the first cover we have offered where the cover has travelled by the much slower land route (5 days instead of one day), due to the January date of the letter and a frozen Danube: a contemporary report in the 'Irish Times' stating that travel on the Danube was 'impractible' on the week in question due to the 'exceedingly rough weather'.

Reverse with 'Bakeu / Moldova' cds of arrival (5/9) struck in blue. The entire with some creasing and hinged for protection at right but a remarkable and rare cover - of the seven registered covers of the first issue bearing a single 54 parale for the local registered rate (under 8 Postal Stations), one is missing (see Heimbüchler I page 307), one is in a museum (see page 305), three are used ex Bakeu and thus only two are not cut round; this being the earliest cover recorded with this registered franking. Some toning and file fold away from the stamps, reverse with handwritten calculations, but a very interesting cover. Although an inland cover by definition it was first sent from Turnu Severin to the harbour of Orsova in Hungary where it was given to a ship to be mailed down the Danube and then onwards to Bucharest.
