Great Britain 1835 (Oct 1): Convict's entire letter written from Noblestown, Scotland to Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land and carried privately on the Barque 'Thomas Lawrie' (also illegal!), the letter was mailed on arrival with '2' (pence) charged due for a local letter in manuscript. The entire is addressed to one 'William Cumming, Carpenter, care of Mr. Thos. Hood', both of whom had arrived on Convict Transports: Thomas Hood was convicted in Perth on April 14, 1831 of a felony and was transported for 7 years, sailing on the 'Elizabeth III' in October 7, 1831 he arrived in Hobart on February 14, 1832 with 220 male convicts, all of whom had survived the voyage. Hood was pardoned on March 29, 1838. There is evidence that William Cumming was also a convict, a man of the same name was convicted in Aberdeen in 1830 and transported for 7 years also. He too was sent to Van Diemen's Land and was pardoned in January 1848. The content of the letter is interesting 'I intend to send this letter by Mrs Shaw's sister on the 'Margaret Graham' Bark' and also gives a listing of the length of time letters took to be received (normally about seven months). A fascinating letter.
