Switzerland 1858 (March 13): Entire letter at triple rate from Kreuzlingen to Melbourne endorsed 'via Marseille & Suez', franked by Switzerland 1855 Berne printing 40 rp. green (8, detached from cover and re-affixed inaccurately) cancelled by 'Kreuzlingen' datestamps in black with framed "P.D." alongside in black, changed to "P.P.". French entry'Suisse / St. Louis' (March 15) and "7 / A.E.D" treaty mark alongside and Zurich, Mulhouse and Marseilles transit cds's. SHIP LETTER VICTORIA FREE (May 13) arrival datestamp in red on reverse. Covers to Victoria had to be franked with 95 rappen per weight step when sent via France, thus this letter is overfranked by 35 r. Although the letter could only be paid to the Port, letters via Great Britain had to be marked with 'PD' while those sent via France had to be marked with 'PP'. This explains the confusion of the Swiss postal clerk when marking this cover. In spite of imperfections a rare and interesting cover to a very scarce destination. Cert. Eichele (2013).
