Recess by Narciso Desmadryl from Perkins Bacon Plates 1854 (Sept / 1855 (Feb): The two most legendary and important mint multiples in Chilean philately with the February 1855 5 c. pale reddish brown, wmk. pos.1, the famous unused block, with a marginal block of six, a single example and a vertical marginal pair forming the irregular block of nine, of outstanding rich colour with large margins all round and just the fourth stamp imperceptibly shaved at top, with italic imprint at base "(coloc)ar las estamp(illas arriba de) la direccion y hacia la derecha En moja(ndo)". Positions 219-220-221-222-223 / 231--233-234-235 on the sheet of 240 subjects. Minor imperfections and position 235 with minor scuff on face of no significance, some slight ancient paper adherence on reverse otherwise fresh and very fine with large part original gum. A fantastic block (the block of six alone would be the largest known multiple), illustrated in Edition D'Or XXVI on page 95, illustrated in 'Los Primeros Sellos de Chile' by Joaquin Galvez on colour plate 3. The 'pièce de resistance' of Chilean classic philately. Cert. Philatelic Foundation (1997).rnrnProvenance 5 centavos: Collection Joaquin Galvez, Corinphila sale 62, May 1979, lot 3144.rn                   Collection Jean Dupont, Balasse, May 1981, lot 56.rn                   Collection 'Islander', Corinphila sale 95. Dec 1996, lot 886.rnrnoffered together with the September 1854 Desmadryl printing 10 c. slate blue, wmk. position 1, with marginal 'CORREOS', the equally famous unused sheet marginal block of ten (5 x 2) from top of sheet, positions 6-10/18-22, in wonderfully fresh condition in a sharp impression, with huge margins on three sides and sixth stamp cut into at base, showing part sheet marginal inscription "hacia la derecha  En mojando el Dorso es preciso cuidar de no..." at top. The block was found attached to the reverse flap of a November 1854 cover addressed to Buenos Aires, the obverse of the cover bearing a marginal horizontal pair of 10 c. with imprint "..s arriba de la direccion y" showing part of the "h" of "hacia" and thus adjoining the block of ten, the block being unnecessary to the cover and probably left there in error as the rate to Argentina was only double the internal tariff. Minute trivial thins and tiny scissor cut in margin only at top well away from the design and not affecting the splendid appearance, reverse with slight indentation made by the original wax seal which can be seen against the light. The block was obviously lightly adhering to the reverse of the cover and was removed prior to 1926, fully preserving the gum proved by the two tiny specks of red wax on the large part original gum. The largest recorded multiple of the Desmadryl 10 centavos and the only recorded unused block. Illustrated in 'Chile First Issues of Postage Stamps 1853-1867' by Gerhard Blank on colour plate 4. An outstanding multiple of extraordinary beauty and perfect provenance. One of the most important pieces of both Chilean and South American classic philately. Unique. Cert. Philatelic Foundation (1997).rnrnProvenance: Described in the Kohl Handbook in 1925 on page 652. Collections Marco del Pont and Dr. Hahn (prior to 1926), R.F.A. Riesco (1926)*, Alfred H. Caspary, Harmers, June 1958, lot 641; Collection Josiah K. Lilly, Siegel, Dec 1968, lot 97; Collection Joaquin Galvez, Corinphila sale 62, May 1979, lot 3238; Collection 'Islander', Corinphila sale 95, Dec 1996, lot 860.rnrnNote: R.F.A.Riesco exhibited this block in the International Exhibition at Grand Central Palace, New York, Oct 16-26, 1926. In his four frame collection mentioned in the catalogue for the exhibition is a "marginal mint block of ten of the 10c. Desmadryl printing of 1854."rnCorinphila would like to thank Jörg Maier for the photographs of the original November 1854 cover that resides in his collection.rnrnThe above two multiples represent the most important mint multiples of Chilean classic philately and are offered together for the first time as one lot, the previous owners alone, from Riesco, Caspary, Lilly, Galvez, Dupont, Hubbard and Hackmey represent a 'roll-call' of many of the greatest collectors known to Chilean philately since its inception as a hobby. A wonderful opportunity to obtain the two major mint multiples of Chile.rnrnrnrnrn

1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond HillrnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the „specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents.rnFrom Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd. (1998).rnrnThe complete set of four values, Third London 1 c. chrome-yellow, second London 5 c. red-brown on blued, Third London 10 c. blue on blued and the 20 c. green with large part og.; all fine used with large part "CANCELLED" obliterator handstamps in black. This is the set of four as illustrated in Peter Jaffe's book. An exceptional group with just six examples of each produced. Rare. Certs. Third London Printing. Recess by Perkins Bacon 1861 (Oct): 10 c. blue on bluish, the horizontal strip of seven with large to touched margins, used on the famous and wonderfully attractive registered cover from Limache to Quillota, paying the 1 ounce rate + registration fee. The first stamp with Plate Flaw showing vertical line through "E" of CORREOS, (Blank 11/Pe20), thus positioning the strip from the upper left corner of the sheet pos. 1-7 and showing further re-entries on positions 3, 4 and 5; all neatly tied by target handstamps in blue. Framed CERTIFICADA at left and LIMACHE / CHILE despatch cds at right (March 15, 1865) also in blue, the corners of the cover with diagonal lines to indicate registration. London Printing 1853 (July 1): 5 c. red-brown on blued paper, the famous 1853 entire letter from Santiago to Valparaiso bearing five single examples, all with generally large margins all round, each stamp neatly tied by six barred target handstamps in black with SANTIAGO straight line handstamp above in black. The inside of the letter with the date of sending (July 16, 1853 and thus in the third week of issue) as the straight line handstamp was used in lieu of the circular datestamp: this being the earliest usage thus. One or two tiny acid ink imperfections of no significance. Illustrated in 'Chile First Issues of Postage Stamps 1853-1867' by Gerhard Blank on colour plate 5. London Printing 1853 (July 1): 5 c. red-brown on blued paper in a vertical pair and single 10 c. deep bright blue on yellowish paper, used on the famous cover from Copiapo to Córdoba, with the 5 c. pair with four margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp at base, the 10 c. with ample to large margins. The 5 c. pair tied by two strikes on each stamp of the seven barred target handstamp in red possibly struck twice because of the weak contrast of a red cancellation on a red stamp and the 10 c. with a single strike, wonderfully contrasting with COPIAPO straight line handstamp centrally struck in red. Reverse with manuscript docketing of receipt (March 1). The rate to Argentina was double the internal rate, thus this cover is fully prepaid for a ½ letter. Mixed frankings of the first two stamps of Chile are rarities. An exceptional and quite beautiful cover for the connoisseur of classic philately. Cert. Recess at the Santiago Post Office from Perkins Bacon plates - 'Estancos' 1856/61: 10 c. slate-blue, a horizontal pair with large margins all round and sheet marginal at right (small part of imprint), used on 1857 entire letter carried at double rate from Valparaiso via Lamar (Cobija) to Oruro, Bolivia; tied by target handstamps in black. VALPARAISO cds of despatch in red (Oct 14). Recess by Henri Gillet from Perkins Bacon Plates 1854 (April): 5 c. Burnt Siena (chocolate group, a deep shade on yellow paper), a fine example of rich colour with large margins all round used with 1854 Desmadryl 10 c. deep blue, shaved at left but with huge margins on three sides showing adjoining stamp at top, tied to 1855 cover from Santiago to Valparaiso by target cancels in black. SANTIAGO cds of despatch in red at right (Feb 21). Whilst the official tariff has no 15 centavos rate, this was utilised in the early years of adhesive issues for letters weighing just over ½ ounce. SANTIAGO despatch cds in red at right (Aug 16). On arrival in Lima (Aug 26, datestamp on reverse), the cover was marked '3' in blue crayon for triple rate and handstruck "30 / CENTAVOS" applied in black together with oval CONDUCCION / DEL CARTERO / GRATIS in black (free delivery). Lithographed by Henri Gillet 1854 (April-August): 5 c, red-brown, a fine used example with large even margins all round, used on 1854 cover from Valparaiso to Lima, Peru tied by six barred target handstamp in black. VALPARAISO despatch cds in red below (Aug 15). The letter sheet bears no other markings, however the 5 centavos paid the local rate and the cover was presumably handed to a PSNC Captain for onward transmission (the decree for obligatory franking via the PSNC was not signed until April 1856). A most attractive and appealing cover. Signed R. Mondolfo. Cert. Philatelic Foundation (1994).
