    1843 (Aug 17): Entire letter from Wanganui (renamed Petre by the New Zealand Company) to Portobello, Scotland endorsed 'Paid' in manuscript at upper left, struck with superb strike of PETRE straight line handstamp in black of despatch (first year of use). Reverse with straight line SHIP LETTER in black and London and Glasgow cds's (Feb 26 and 28, 1844) and framed Portobello datestamp in black. A superb and rare entire with long and interesting contents including a fight between the 'natives' and the local Police - "the Police Magistrate is half-crazy type of person".

Large Star on white paper, the outstanding horizontal used strip of four (Row 11, stamps 3-4-5-6), with ample to large margins all round but first stamp with closed tear (but also shows the re-entry with additional vertical line running through from 'N' of 'New Zealand'), fourth stamp with corner fault at upper right, of fine fresh deep colour and lightly cancelled by numeral "1" obliterators of Auckland in black. A wonderful and famous multiple that has graced many of the finest and most renowned collections of the area. One of the great classic rarities of both World and New Zealand philately. Unique. Certs.     1857 (January): Richardson printing, 1 d. dull orange on white paper, wmk. Large Star, the famous "Dwarf" print, with complete watermark and large margins on three sides and trace of right hand margin at upper right, small thin mentioned for accuracy, the design measuring 18 mm. x 18 mm. (against 19 mm. x 25.5 mm. for the 'normal' stamp), this extraordinarily crushed but complete example was probably caused by an interruption in the printing process. The stamp is cancelled by the oval "NSW" New South Wales duplex in black (introduced in 1858), as is the only other example recorded, presently in the Tapling Collection in the British Library in London, an enlarged colour copy of which accompanies the lot. The Tapling example is in the same shade and both stamps probably emanated from the same cover and were later plated by Grace Gordon Kaye as coming from Row 15, positions 1 and 2. Unique in private hands and one of the most famous of all Classic Stamp varieties and the most famous stamp of New Zealand. Cert. RPSL (1941), BPA (2019).rnrnNote: This stamp was initially found by Robson Lowe and the RPSL certificate of 7 April 1941 attributes it to the Davies printing of 1862. Much research and comparative study has since taken place and we believe that the stamp is from a Richardson printing. The stamp then appears to have been 'lost' in a collection as the late Derek M. Bolton always claimed (over many lunches with this describer) that he found it in a 'mixed lot' of New Zealand. However, the stamp was later the subject of two articles in the 'Philatelist' in 1971 by Grace Gordon Kaye and was eventually sold at auction through London Stamp Exchange on 8 March 1974, as lot 328.

    1860: Pin Roulette 10 at Nelson, 2 d. blue, a horizontal strip of three with intact roulettes vertically between the stamps and especially present at left and above the first and under the second and third stamps, indistinct numeral obliterator cancels in black leaving the roulettes clear. Minor imperfections but without doubt the largest known multiple and, as a strip of three, probably the largest known multiple of any of the Trial separation stamps. Unique. Cert. Endorsed at top 'From No. 658, Private James Penley, 50th Regiment' and counter-signed correctly at lower left by Captain R.H.P Doran commanding. Reverse with 'Stroud' arrival cds (Oct 21) in black. Cert. BPA (1991), RPSL (2006), sold together with an extraordinary 1866 cover, addressed to James Penley (but without stating his rank of Private) franked correctly with Great Britain 1858/798 1 d. red, pl. 92 tied by Stroud duplex with extremely rare instructional "RANK / NOT STATED" in red and "RETURNED FOR POSTAGE / THE AMOUNT / "5d." / DEFICIENT" in red with London cds (May 24) alongside (6 d. would have been the Officer's rate).     1864/71: 1 s. yellow-green, single example in a bright shade, used on 1867 cover from Christchurch to Goderich, Canada West via Panama tied by "C" obliterator in black. Christchurch despatch cds below (Oct 30) and '4d.' credit annotation in blue crayon. Reverse with ST. THOMAS transit cds (Dec 14) and Goderich arrival cds (Jan 2, 1868) in black. Cover ironed and with slight trim at left but an attractive usage to a scarce destination: by London GPO notice of Nov. 29, 1867, the New Zealand P.O. were instructed to make up Mails for St. Thomas rather than Panama. This was short-lived as the Canadian Govt. asked for Mails to be made up from Panama to New York to avoid delays. Cert.
