    1872/73: 2 d. vermilion and 6 d. blue, perf. 12½, used on 1872 cover from Christchurch to Mayence / Mainz, Germany endorsed 'via San Francisco' neatly tied by 'Christchurch / C' duplexes in black (Aug 3). 'London / Paid' transit cds in red on front (Oct 2) with oval 'P-D' in red and reverse with arrival (Oct 4) in black. A fresh and fine cover to a surprisingly unusual destination for Chalon mail, carried from Honolulu to San Francisco by the Steamer 'Olympia' which was chartered solely for this one trip due to breakdowns of normal contract vessels.
