    1839 (Feb 4): Registered cover prepaid to Bogota (addressed to Tomas Mosquera, President of the Republic of Colombia), with manuscript annotated edges denoting registration, struck with exceptional oval PANAMA / FRANCO handstamp in red. Manuscript endorsement of the Postmaster at top 'Certificacion Panamá / sale hoi 4 de Feb 1839, Gonzales'. Reverse with explanation of rate in manuscript 4 reales postage and 8 reales for registration, total 12 reales paid. The earliest recorded registered cover from Panama and an item of great beauty.

    1851 (April 10): Judicial cover to Veraguas endorsed at top '14½ oz.' and (folded over at right) 'Valor 29 rs.' struck with partially framed NATÀ despatch handstamp in brown. Reverse with full docketing and clearly dated. The Natà strike somewhat over-inked and some acid ink but of great rariy with just three examples of this handstamp recorded. Cert. Moorhouse (2004).

    1872: Entire letter from Guayaquil to Lima, Peru franked with two vertical pairs of 1865/72 1 r. yellow on quadrille paper, margins touched to fine, tied by two strikes of dotted FRANCA lozenge in black. Carried on French Paquebot and additionally franked  by France 1863/70 40 c. vermilion and 80 c. rose carmine tied by dotted Anchor lozenge and by octagonal GUAYAQUIL / PAQ. FR. F. No. 2 datestamp (May 4) beautifully struck in black (Salles fig. 1383). Carried on the 'Ville de Brest' and reverse with circular LIGNE F / PAQ. FR. No. 2 datestamp in black and smudged Lima arrival cds. A most attractive and very rare entire. Cert. Brun (2014).

    Note: This cover is, as far as we aware, the sole recorded usage of a double rate combination franking between Ecuador & France.

    1866/67: A magnificent old-time Cancellations collection with 5 c. green (86 stamps), 10 c. vermilion (157) and 20 c. brown (31) all with variety of different cork cancels in black, blue, green, red or violet, variety of circular datestamps in black or red, dotted cancels incl. 'Ambo', 'Nasca' Emsing = 150 pts., noted 'Pullo' double oval in black E = 150 pts, Lima Railway Company markings E = 175 pts., Registration cachets incl. oval 'Certificado / Piura' in blue, framed examples including 'Ancon' unlisted by Emsing, 'Cutervo', 'Eten' and 'Mollendo' in red, Pimentel (unlisted) and 'San Mateo' in violet, 'unframed 'Pabellon de Pica', 'Cuartel General' in black E = 200 pts., Customs mark with 'Aduana / Pacasmoyo' in blue, a few 1886/95 issue usages (67 stamps). A marvellous lot and almost impossible to duplicate nowadays.

    1674-1813: Collection 'Quito, Ecuador - to, through and from Quito, a survey of the Mail Service between 1674 and 1813', mounted on pages with 20 Colonial period covers and documents. Better markings including 1790 GUAYAQUIL / FRANCA in red (Tizon 1 = EXT),  1813 QUENCA DEBE, 1811 truncated LATACUNGA and FRANCA (Harris #1 = 9 pts), 1795 truncated OTAVALO (Harris #1 = 9 pts) and 1790 RIOBAMBA DEBE each in red, 1811 framed CUENCA / DEBE (Harris #1 = 8 pts), 1674 incoming letter with large printed document about sanctions by the Spanish against French Shipping, 1763 petition written by an Indian Chief, 1773 payment receipt, 1774 postal document, 1794 carriage bulletin, 1776 cover from Lima, etc., mostly good or above average condition, a rare group.

Carried on French Paquebot and additionally franked  by France 1863/70 30 c. grey brown horizontal pair tied by dotted Anchor lozenge with octagonal GUAYAQUIL / PAQ. FR. F.     1865: ½ r. ultramarine, a horizontal strip of four, marginal from top of sheet, left stamp just touched otherwise with huge margins all round, the right pair colourless embossed oval Control 'Republica del Ecuador' with Coat of Arms, used on 1866 cover to Lima, Peru tied by two strikes of GUAYAQUIL datestamps (Aug 12) in black. Reverse with Lima arrival cds (Aug 16). Cover with slight hole on front panel on 'Ch' of 'Chavez' but an extremely rare usage of this embossed marking on letter.

    1903: The Exhibit collection on leaves and a few loose, with exhaustive plating study of both the genuine and the reprints / fogeries, from both the issues with ship type 10 c. black on orange paper in a mint block of 12 from left of sheet, used examples signed Antonio Sucre; blocks of 24 with Cuidad Bolivar (April 29) duplexes and Control markings, extensive plating of the forgeries with large multiples, rare Arms type with 10 c. black on orange mint pair, the complete set genuine used (all signed on face by Sucre) and plating multiples from genuine and forgeries; also Maturin and Merino issues with significant reasearch in plating and types throughout, together with 'Instruccion' stamps and a few earlier Carupano Locals. Articles on both issues present with the lot. A seldom offered issue in this quality and quantity, viewing is recommended.

    1864 'St. Thomas-La Guaira-Puerto Cabello' Steamship Line: Rasco issue 2 r. green, a fine example with exceptional colour and roulettes for this issue, used on 1866 entire letter to Genoa, Italy, tied by neat strike of 'La Guaira' despatch cds (Feb 25) in black. Carried to St. Thomas on the 'Robert Todd' steamer and thence  to London (March 16) with red transit cds on reverse and struck there with 'GB / 1F 60c.' Accountancy handstamp in black. Taxed on arrival in Genoa with manuscript '10' for the 1 lire due from the recipient. A scarce and most attractive entire. Cert. Fiecchi (1971), Moorhouse (2014).

    1865/72: 1 r. yellow on quadrille paper - seven horizontal pairs and six single examples used with 1871 ½ r. deep blue on blued paper on large part 1873 legal front of cover to Latacunga and adhesives cancelled by 18 strikes of ornamenta 'P.I.' geometric handstamps in black. Manuscript notations 2 lb. 7 oz' (39 ounces) explaining the 19½ reales franking and reverse with QUITO / FRANCA datestamp (Jan 29, 1873). Left hand stamps with faults and the cover refolded for display but an extremely rare multiple franking, especially so with this elusive cancellation.

Manuscript '1 L 37 7/8 oz.' at upper right corresponding to the 10 reales rate.
