1608/09: Venetian "AQ" letter-sheets with the Lion of St. Mark emblem between, the World's First Postal Stationery (pre-dating the 'Cavallino's and the Mulready by over two hundred years), small group of five items with a mint example and four used-all in the first two years of issue, one being dated February 1608. The "AQ" standing for "Acque" was printed at the top of each sheet along with the 1608 statute under which the system operated, with a further surcharge of 4 soldi for posting each letter. 1850/54: 5 centesimi yellow, 15 c. red (Type III) and 45 c. blue (Type II), all hand-paper used on large part cover to Turin tied by bold strikes of COMO 1/12 datestamps in black. Red 'P.D.' at right and letter crossed in manuscript to denote pre-payment. The adhesives all with large margins all round, the 5 c. with slight scissor cut well away from the design in margin but of great scarcity as a three colour franking and a most attractive cover. The second stamp in the strip showing the plate flaw: defective 'K' in upper left corner. 15 c. bright rose, Handpaper, Type III, a magnificent used example with huge margins all round and showing complete Andrew's Cross / Croce di S. Andrea at base and small portion of adjoining cross at right, neatly cancelled by MILANO 13/9 datestamp in black. Imperceptible dent in the paper on reverse and barest trace of paper loss in margin mentioned for technical accuracy only and of no significance, this being a stamp of both great rarity and beauty. This describer has recorded just three examples of the 15 centesemi with Andrew's Cross used in Milan (two single examples and a vertical pair) of which this is undoubtedly the finest.
