    1842 (June 22): Entire letter from John Donald in Glasgow to the Island of Tanna, Reverend Henry Nisbet correspondence, without postal markings - the contents state "being aware that a box is going out to you", with good will messages to both Mr. and Mrs. Nisbet and fellow missionaries the Turners. Both couples were landed on Tanna from the London Missionary Society ship "Camden" at the end of June 1842 and after a difficult period were evacuated by the whaler "Highlander" in January 1843 and taken to Samoa due to hostile threats from the natives of Vanuatu. An early Nisbet letter sent via the L.M.S. ship to Sydney and routed on by Reverend Ross of the L.M.S. - it is probable that it reached him prior to their leaving for Samoa. Displays well, very rare.

Straight line "REGISTERED LETTER" in red at left, circular "PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR. PACKET" cds in red (8 MY 75) and double ring "REGISTERED / LIVERPOOL" cds of the same day in red.     1876 ( Mar. 27): 2d blue, wmk. Crown CC, perf 12½, three used examples of vibrant colour on cover from Lagos to Wolverhampton from the "Bailey and Son, Wolverhampton" correspondence, cancelled by three LAGOS obliterators with "L" in center in black. A fine strike of "LAGOS" code A datestamp is partially obscured, a "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" in red (29 April 76) cds (Robertson type S9) was applied on arrival in England, the franking is split in the domestic 1d. and 5d. credit by two red manuscript markings. Central stamp unobrusive corner fault, the reverse affected by rough opening, otherwise a very fine, desirable letter. rnrn

    1918 (June 4): 'S.S. Kenilworth Castle' wreck cover (opened for display) franked with KGV 1d. from "Pretoria 24 Apr. 18" to a B.E.F. Royal Flying Corps member in France, redirected to Befast, Ireland, showing on reverse three line special cachet 'R.E.Postal Section L'don N.W.1 / Damaged by immersion / in sea water' in violet. The ship was used as a troop transport during WW I, surviving a collision with HMS Rival Eddystone June 4, 1918. 15 crew members were drowned and the ship was badly damaged. She safely made it into Plymouth where she then sank on a mud bank.

    1907 (12 Oct.): Mammoth Balloon Flight Daily Graphic Newspaper "A Message from Mid-Air" sponsored postcard from Crystal Palace addressed to Kilkenny Ireland, sent unfranked with framed 'T' and British '2d/I.S.B' handstamped postage due applied in London.rnThe "Mammoth" ascended with three men on board: J.L. Tanner (owner), A.E. Caudron (a balloonist) and C. Turner of the Daily Graphic. The balloon reached Sweden on 14 October. The aeronauts mistook the Swedish Lake Vännern for the open Atlantic and crash-landed near the village of Bracken. The aeronauts left the balloon which broke up and finally came to land at Tösse with cards scattered over a large area.
