    Warren Expedition to Bechuanaland 1885: Soldier's Letter endorsed at top "From Trooper Learmonth, 1st Mounted Rifles" and counter-signed at lower left by Officer Commanding, franked at concessionary rate by Cape of Good Hope 1 d. carmine-red tied by 'BARKLY / G. W.' cds (Jan 31) in black. The cover, addressed to Capt. Sinclair of the 5th Lancers in Dublin, was readdressed with backstamps of Kimberley (Jan 31), Cape Town (Feb 3), 'H & K Packet' (Feb 26), Dundalk (Feb 26 and March 2) and Jedburgh (March 3) upon eventual arrival. Mail was despatched weekly from the Expedition from the Headquarters in Barkly. Extremely rare.rnrnNote: In 1879 Charles Warren was Chief Administrator of Griqualand West. On his return to England he was asked by the Admiralty in 1882 to lead a search party to Sinai to discover what had happened to Professor Edward Henry Palmer's archaeological expedition. He discovered that the expedition members had been robbed and murdered, located their remains, and brought their killers to justice for which he knighted upon his return. Due to his Griqualand service he was asked to lead the 1884 'Warren' Expedition into Bechuanaland to assert British sovereignty in the face of encroachments from Germany and the Transvaal, and to suppress the Boer states of Stellaland and Goshen, which were backed by the Transvaal and were stealing land and cattle from the local Tswana tribes.The force of 4,000 British and local troops headed north from Cape Town, accompanied by the first three observation balloons ever used by the British Army in the field. The expedition achieved its aims without bloodshed, and Warren was recalled in September 1885 and was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) on 4 October 1885.

Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond HillrnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the „specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property.     1895 (March 12): ½ d. on 6 d. violet, the unused collection with 160 examples, including two blocks (half sheets) of 60 stamps each and thus showing varieties a-ka complete; block of fifteen with reversed wmk., single example of the "Surcharge Double, One Vertical" variety (signed A. Diena), three examples with SPECIMEN handstamp in violet (3) including one example with 'No Stop' error, together with a fascinating hand written manuscript dated 15 May 1895 copied from the 'Stamp Collector's Journal'.     1895 (March 18): Locally surcharged HALF on 1 d. rose unused, a complete left pane of 60 ( 6 x 10) from the First Setting of 24 (12 x 2) forme, showing the variety "Surcharge Double" on positions 13-18 and 19-24, the second surcharge coincident in first coloumn and widening across the pane; with Plate '3' in margin at lower left, fresh and fine, large part or unmounted og. Some minor splitting and piece of selvedge missing at upper left but a pane of superb appearance and very rare. Cert. BPA (2019) Gi = £ 5'700+.

    1895: British Inland Mail. Covers carried on the 'Donald Currie' Line of Steamers from Vatomandry, Madagascar during the French Fleet's blockade of Tamatave. Combination cover from Antananarivo to Doncaster, franked by British Inland Mail March 1895 4 d. rose, perf. 12, tied by BRITISH / MAIL / ANTANANARIVO thimble cds in violet (Sept 9), with Natal 1891 2½ d. bright blue applied for onward transmission and tied by 'Durban' cds (Oct 25) in black. Reverse with Doncaster (Nov 10) arrival cds in black. The cover with corner tear at upper left and partial back flap lost but very rare: the service was only in use from January to 30 September 1895.

Combination cover sent registered at triple rate from Antananarivo to Newton Heath, Manchester, franked by British Inland Mail March 1895 4 d. rose and 1 s. slate-blue, perf. 12, each tied by BRITISH / MAIL / ANTANANARIVO thimble cds's in violet (July 9), in combination with Natal 1891 2½ d. bright blue (3) and single 1882 4 d. brown applied for onward transmission and tied by 'Durban' cds (July 30) in black and by oval 'R' of registration. Reverse with Manchester arrival (Aug 26) in black. Minor creasing of no significance, an outstanding cover at an extraordinary rate from this service and of great rarity: the service was only in use from January to 30 September 1895.rnrnNote: There were no triple rate registered frankings in the Frederick Mayer collection (Spink, 2007) or the 'Madagascar Specialised' collection (DF, 2010).

    902/06: Essays from the De La Rue records, sheet headed "Appendix A" and dated "28 June 1906" at top, with Imperforate 1½ d. values (13) all in unissued colours, each printed in two colours with the exception of the first (in dull green, for the ½ d. value), and each annotated for the proposed colour scheme with the value alongside in manuscript. The Essays were produced following a complaint from the Natal Government that stamps had been found re-used with previous cancellations washed off, their request was for stamps to be supplied in doubly fugitive ink in future. Now in two separate halves for display, the page is illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 5024.     1902/03: 4 d. deep rose & maize, wmk. Crown CA, the famous horizontal pair, variety "perf. 14 x Imperforate Vertically Between", marginal from left of sheet, also "Imperforate between stamp and margin" and second stamp perf. 14 vertically at right, some 'v' shaped creasing and colour from sheet stored below on large part og. A major rarity, there are believed to be but two pairs known: Gibbons state 'from a Proof sheet' which is eminently probable, however this does not explain the lack of furher copies coming to light in the past thirty years (we record two pairs) or the lack of an example in the "De La Rue Collection". A splendid and extremely rare pair Gi = formerly listed as Gi 139a, unpriced.
