1854: 4 d. blue, the famous INVERTED SWAN variety, technically an ‘Inverted Frame’, a superlative used example with four large margins all round, extremely lightly cancelled for this rarity, with the only fault being an unapparent 3mm. paper break near the centre of the stamp best viewed under ultra-violet light and perhaps a vertical bend, otherwise this stamp can be listed as one of, or perhaps, the finest known example as far as appearance is concerned. Full listing of how this variety occurred and other relevant information of this error is included with the lot and more infomation is to be found in L. N. and M. Williams "Stamps of Fame" on page 192, where listed as example 'IX'. Just 15 examples of this error are recorded of which 6 are in Museum collections, including one (ex Duveen) in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A truly wonderful example of this legendary error, of exceptional provenance and the finest specimen of the most iconic Australian stamp in private hands. Signed Calves; certs. Friedl (1980) RPSL (2017) Scott 3a = $ 95'000/Michel Gi = £ 140'000.rnrnL.N. Williams in Encyclopaedia of Rare and Famous Stamps (1997) listed 14 recorded  genuine examples of this variety, of which seven are housed in museums and institutional collections (Royal Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, British Library, London; Australian Museum, Sydney (2; Mitchell Library, Sydney; Western Australia Museum, Perth; National Museum of Ireland, Dublin). From the remaining seven examples in private hands, no less than four are in one private collection.rnrnProvenance:rnPhilipp la Renotière von Ferrary (1923); bought by Tommy Allen for E.H.Collins.rnE. If so, it will be necessary to print them in 'Doubly Fugitive" inks, in order to make them available for both Postage and Revenue purposes. We would propose purple for the 1d. and green for the 2d.". 1850: Alfred Clayton 'Sydney View' Essays, composite photo-lithographic facsimile of the original Essay which is housed in the Tapling Collection in the British Library, comprising reproductions of the 1d. and 3d. Essays which are mounted on paper and endorsed 'The form and colour are approved, but the execution is very far from satisfactory and must be greatly improved before the contract can be sanctioned'. This facsimile was produced by Alfred van Dyck, some time before the originals were sold by him to Tapling and prior to Thomas Tapling's death in 1891. The blank space in between contained the Essay for the 2d. value which was purchased for and remains in the Royal Collection. Officials 1932 (July 11): ½ d. orange, the famous "O.S." inverted overprint, in pair with normal, rejoined, the variety being marginal from the top of sheet and rejoined initially by the Printer, from the original horizontal strip of six forming the top row of the left hand pane which was found to be defective. The printer working from the back of the sheet, then placed six stamps back on to the sheet and re-joined them to the sheet, little realising that he had replaced them upside down and thus they received an inverted overprint when the sheet was passed through for the "O.S." overprint.
