    Channel Islands 1853: France 40 c. orange used on cover from Jersey to Chateau D'Oleron, France endorsed "France via London" at top, with "JERSEY" double arc despatch cds (Jan 11) in blue-black and the adhesive left un-cancelled; Calais transit cds at right (Jan 12) and the adhesive cancelled by dotted "CP3°" ambulant in black. Reverse of cover with rare undated "ST. JOHNS" undated circle in blue, further Jersey cds London transit and arrival cds (Jan 14). Faults to cover but a rare and most unusual cover crossing the Channel twice.

ART.13" in red and Calais (Oct 27), where British Ship Letter charge of '8' (pence) was overstruck with '15' décimes handstamp due for a single letter, this reaffirmed in manuscript. Adriatic" of the Galway Line; tied by barred obliterator in black with "ST.JOHNS - NEWFOUNDLAND" despatch cds in red adjacent (Nov 21). London transit on reverse (Nov 30) and struck there with framed "GB / 1F 60 c." accountancy marking in black, over-struck by "MORE-TO-PAY" handstamp in black with '2d.' in blue crayon alongside (short paid 2d. on despatch), British credit '5' (pence) in red at upper left. "Angl. / Calais" entry marking (Nov 30) also ties the adhesive and charged there with handstruck '8' décimes due in black. Light file folds of no importance with just three examples of this stamp bisected on letter are recorded. Listed in Robert H.     1851/57: 3 d. bright blue, a horizontal strip of three with third stamp diagonally bisected, margins large to touched all round, of fine colour, used on 1860 cover from Halifax to Paris endorsed "per R.M.Steamer", all tied by three strikes of 'H' in bars obliterator in black; prepaying the 7½ d. rate to Great Britain. Reverse with HALIFAX / NOVA SCOTIA datestamp in black (Sept 20), carried on the Cunard "America" arriving at Liverpool on September 30th. Struck in London (Oct 1) with framed "GB / 2F.-" accountancy marking (10d. British credit) and thence via Calais (Oct 1) to Paris where charged '20' décimes due in manuscript for a double weight letter (above 7½ and under 15 grams). The addressee's name partially erased not detracting from the appearance of a spectacular cover to a rare destination for classic Nova Scotian mail, believed unique. Cert.
