    1854/56: 'Queen on Throne' Perkins Bacon sunken Die Proof (53 x 65 mm.), similar to the central vignette of the 1 d. value, with VICTORIA inscribed on lower step and laurel leaf surround, printed in black on thick card paper, signed at base "Humphrys" in pencil (extremely unusual and rare thus). The design was based on a watercolour drawing by Edward Henry Corbould. Scarce and most appealing, almost identical to the Die Proof offered (lot 2068) in the first Purves sale.     1854 (Aug 1): 4 d. pale blue and vertical pair of 1 d. black imperforate, each with large margins all round and each with portions of adjoining stamps at left, used on 1856 linen backed envelope addressed to E. H. Sanford in Wellington, Somerset and endorsed 'Overland via Point de Galle', tied by mute obliterators in black. Oval framed 'POST OFFICE / Crown / FREEMANTLE / WESTERN AUSTRALIA' handstamp in black at left, with London (July 6) cds in red and Wellington arrival cds (July 7) on reverse. Charged '6' (pence) due on receipt. The 1 d. pair applied originally over the edge of cover and with faults concomitant to this, however a beautiful and charming cover of great scarcity.rnrnNote: The addressee, William Ayshford Sanford was Western Australia Colonial Secretary from Jan 1852-July 1855.

    1854 (Aug 1): 4 d. pale blue, rouletted 7½ to 14, a fine used example with portion of adjoining stamp at left, imperforate at right margin but with the other three sides clearly rouletted (and rare to be able to measure these so accurately on this issue), lightly cancelled in black. An exceptional stamp Gi = £ 700.rnrnNote: The stamp also shows the variety "T" of POSTAGE shaved off, , a shrunked 'T' in 'Australia' at right and the 'S' of 'Western' joined to the outer frame.
