Chalon Head Issues, London Printings 1820/22: Small part of the sample Plate produced and inscribed by "Perkins, Fairman & Heath / London. Patent Hardened Steel Plate" in microscopic lettering at base. The oval engine turning for item '20' being very similar to both the Tasmania Chalon issue and the Peru Steam Navigation Company issue of 1857. In June 1854 Perkins, Bacon were awarded the contract for the Chalon issue, William Humphrys being responsible for the head-plate from a water-colour sketch by E. Lithographed by Thomas Ham 1850 (Jan 5): Half-Length 1 d. orange-brown, Original State, the famous used block of six (3 x 2), with enormous margins for this issue, of outstanding fresh colour and each stamp neatly cancelled by "15" Butterfly handstamp of Geelong in blue. Imperceptible thin spot, the vertical crease described by Harmers in the Boker sale and Siegel in the 'KL' sale being the impressions of the Butterrfly handstamp showing through the soft paper to the reverse. Discussed in Kellow on page 32 "the greatest Victorian piece extant" and illustrated on Colour Plate 1. 1854/1901: Composite Proof strip of five subjects for the 1 shilling value (138 x 33 mm.), printed in black and grey on somewhat creased surface glazed paper, with first Proof at left showing "POSTAGE / ONE SHILLING" unadopted wording, second Proof with accepted "VICTORIA / ONE SHILLING" (both the items with wording have been hand-painted), and the three further Proofs all without wording in the circular surround. Just two or perhaps three impressions (ref. Rod Perry) are believed to have been struck from the Original Die on the occasion of the Duke of Cornwall & York's (later King George V) visit to Australia in 1901.
