1 d. Mulready letter-sheet, stereo obscured by black seal on reverse, superb used to a "Miss East, Great Campden House, Kensington", struck with fine red Maltese Cross, and displaying well on reverse, superb impression of BATH / MY 6 / 1840 code D datestamp in black, the First Day of Issue. It is interesting to note that two other First Day usages are known from Bath (1 d. black lettered EA and a 2 d. Mulready) - both with Code E datestamps, with this Code D example one can see the '0' of '1840' clearly, once the time code was changed to 'E' the '0' of 1840 was unhappily dropped in error (see Jackson's May Dates page 311). One of the very few provincial first day usages. A wonderful and very rare cover in immaculate condition. Cert. Karl Louis AIEP (2013).
Note: Great Campden House in Kensington burnt down on March 23, 1862. At the time this Mulreaedy was sent the house was a boarding school for girls. The house had previously played host to Charles II and been the residence of the young Princess, later Queen Anne.
