Calais entry marking and charged '8' décimes handstruck on arrival. A rare example of the '3 Month rate' applicable from 1 Jan 1857 until 31 March 1857. States Mail Steamer" from New Orleans to Paris tied by black barred handstamps on despatch with "New Orleans" cds in red (July 15) at left. The fine 10 c. pair also tied by "NEW YORK / AM. PKT." cds (July 25) and carried on Collins Line Steamer "Pacific" with London transit cds (Aug 6) in red on reverse; thence via Calais where charged '8' décimes due in black: tariff of 1 Sept 1851. File fold affects the 1 c. but a most attractive and scarce 21 cent prepaid rate (5 c. internal + 16 c. for American Packet).

"NEW YORK / 3" credit marking below (May 24) in red and London (June 5) arrival alongside. The addressee had moved to Paris and thus the entire was charged '16' décimes due on delivery as the letter was considered as a double rate unpaid letter on arrival.     1857/61: 3 c. red-brown and 12 c. black, perf. 12, used on 1858 cover from New Orleans to Paris endorsed "per first Steamer", tied by "New Orleans / La." cds in black with "NEW YORK / 6" credit handstamp alongside in black; the New York PO realising that the cover weighed over ¼ ounce. Struck with framed "SHORT PAID" in red,  the cover was carried by Cunard Line Steamer "Africa" with "Et. Unis Serv. V. Br. A" cds in black (May 10) on obverse and the letter taxed at double rate with '16' décimes due mark in black. A fine and attractive cover Scott = $ 500+.

    1861, Washington 3 c. rose (2), used with 1861 Jackson 2 c. black, two single examples, on 1863 advertising cover from Philadelphia to Guatemala, dated 22 October 1863, tied by two strikes of the Philadelphia datestamp and two grid cancels in black, with part New York Packet mark dated 24 October in red, addressed to "Hon. E. O. Crosby", President Lincoln's Ambassador in Guatemala, the cover was taken on an American steamer at the letter rate of 10c per oz.; horizontal filing crease, horizontal filing crease not affecting stamps, some acid ink erosion and stained, rare cover, being the only known example franked with US 2c black Jacks to Guatemala.

    1861: Washington 10 c. yellow-green, used on cover from Washington to Guatemala, dated 19 March 1862, tied by Washington DC circular datestamp in black dated 20 March, with charge mark "2" in blue alongside. The envelope is addressed to "Hon. E. D. Crosby" (Elisha Oscar Crosby) and contains an extensive letter, headed up "Washington March 19th, 1862", contains interesting historical content relating to President Abraham Lincoln; ".....Mr. Lincoln will get the nomination at the Republican Convention which assembles in Blatimore in June or I will confess that I am politically blind. 13 State Legislators have already passed resolutions favouring his re-election and think they express the voice of the people, and if nominated his election is a certainty, beyond all question. Which is more than can be said for any other aspirant...."; the two page handwritten letter is signed; 'Sam' N. Hilton'; a wonderful snapshot into US politics during the American Civil War period.     1986 (Jan. 28) Space Shuttle STS-51-L "Challenger" - Launch Cover signed by crew members Scobee, Smith, Resnik, Onizuka, McNair and first teacher S. Christa McAuliffe on airmail envelope franked with vert. pair of 'Health Research' 20c. tied by KSC machine cancel (Jan. 28 AM), bearing special cancels 'First Shuttle /"Pad B" Launch' in black and '25th Space / Shuttle Launch / Mission 51-L' in violett alongside. Very Fine. McAuliffe was chosen among 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space and had been scheduled to conduct two classes while in space. Greg Jarvis signature was added later, by someones other hand just to be ment to complete the crew signatures, as Jarvis was a late addition to the flight. A very scarce signed Launch Cover of the Challenger disaster. Probably only ten overs known.rn

    1869: 10 c. yellowish orange, a used example on 1870 cover to Paris tied in black by rare fancy segmented oval handstamp, a superb strike, with San Francisco despatch cds alongside (Aug 12), via New York with transit cds in red (Aug 20). Carried on Inman Line Steamer "City of Brussels" with poor London transit cds on reverse in red and struck there with "GB / 40c." accountancy mark applied in black. An over-payment of the double 2 x 4 c. US rate. Charged at French triple rate with '15' décimes due marking in black on arrival (Aug 31).     1869: 15 c. blue & brown, Type II, a used example on 1869 cover with complete contents from Philadelphia to Paris, initially cancelled by black cork with "PHILADELPHIA / PAID / 12" credit cds in violet (Dec 10), carried on the French Paquebot "Pereire" with octagonal "ETATS-UNIS / PAQ. FR. H No. 1" datestamp (Dec 11) struck in red (Salles fig. 1713). Both these cancellations deleted in manuscript, as was the adhesive, when the cover was forwarded unpaid to EGYPT with "Forwarded By / Drexel Harjes & Co. / Paris" cachet in blue. French P.O. in Alexandria arrival cds (Jan 9, 1870) in black and charged there on arrival with '6' décimes handstruck in black. An extraordinary destination for the 1869 issue and a spectacular usage.

    1847/ Extensive collection set out in two large Leuchtturm albums and six stockbooks, with some additional material in two folders and two large envelopes, includes a specialised, mainly used, stamp assembly organised on printed pages by catalogue numbers, begins with a used Scott no. 1, some gaps early on, although many good runs, commemoratives and souvenir issues have more comprehensive coverage, many complete used sets, stockbooks contain some duplication although sorted, with specialist notations on specifications, as well as airmail stamps, special delivery, postage dues, parcel post and small selection of Hawai, Canal Zone and additionally a group of covers, including two Zepppelin 1930 First Europe-Pan American Round Flight cards, overall good to fine, some intriguing items, a good collection,

    Postal Services in the 1946 Atomic Tests Exhibit Collection, expansive collection documenting the postal history of Operation Crossroads, which consisted of a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted in mid-1946, replete with better items including Joint Task Force 1 cachets, hand-drawn cartoon by Grant Powers (official artist for Operation Crossroads), earliest and latest recorded dates of Branch Number 13746, several covers from Kwajalein Base, November 1946 cover with typed "Joint Crossroads Committee" return address, one of 30 covers flown on the F-13 with Major George Birdsong on Test Baker Day, official card of participation and dog tag from a member of Landing Craft Infantry USS LCI 1067, inbound cover to doctor on the U.S.S. Panamint, April 1946 cover celebrating the broadcast of Jack Benny's Radio Show from the U.S.S. Saratoga, Japanese Battleship Nagato covers, cover carried on B-29 "Dave's Dream" the day of the Able test and signed by nine of the 14 people on board, and much more, plus ancillary material including newspapers detailing the bomb tests, nearly all mounted on exhibit pages with detailed descriptions, very fine, an extraordinary collection for the World War II-era postal historian which could easily be reworked into another exhibit or incorporated into an existing collection, careful viewing recommended.

    1911: South Pole Expedition by Wilhelm Filchner 1911/12. Greeting card from Buenos Aires with text (in German) 'Greetings from E. Hegneck we  continue on 1st 10.  via South Georgia to the Ice. Last greetings, to Buenos Aires, German consulate'. The cards bears a 5 Centavos stamp 'San Martin' and the red label of the expedition 'DEUTSCHE SÜDPOLAR EXPEDITION", with cancellation "RE VITTORIO PIROSCAFO POSTALE ITALIANO 19 SET.11"  stamp and label are cancelled together, a second strike of the cancel is placed aside (possibly the cancel hadn't been updated). Some staining all round the the perforations otherwise fine condition.

One stamp exceptionally well centered, the other slightly centered to the bottom right, has two "25" from the "1925" caused by one overprint being displaced. Very fine cover with all markings on the front; the Junkers F13 flight to Ouro had a few more covers carried than to Sucre and more have survived, but like the previous cover, double rate covers with two of the air post overprints are extremely rare and this cover is one of only two or three covers known to date.
