    British Post Office 1847: Entire letter from Zakynthos (Zante) to Marseille, prepaid with "5d." in red manuscript with '3' credit at right alongside hooded ZANTE despatch in blue (July 11). Transferred to British P.O. and struck with fine "♚  / PAID AT ZANTE" in bluish-black ink. Marseille entry markings in red on obverse and charged '7' décimes due on arrival. Superb Gi = £ 1'400.

    Crimean War 1854: 1 d. red-brown on blued paper, wmk. Small Crown, perf. 16, a single example and a horizontal pair used on 1854 cover, sensibly opened for display to Dover, tied by bold strike of "✵♚✵" obliterator in black. Reverse with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" despatch datestamp in blue (Aug. 16), London transit and Dover arrival (Aug. 28) in black. At this date the British Forces were gathered at Varna, Bulgaria, leaving for the Crimea in September 1854. A fine and attractive cover.

    British Post Office 1853: Prepaid cover from Barcelona, Cataluna to Buenos Ayres, Argentina endorsed "por Canarias", with manuscript '10' at right, struck in transit with very fine "♚  / PAID AT TENERIFFE" in black with red manuscript '1/-' rate alongside. Reverse with double arc TENERIFFE cds of despatch (March 16) in black. A rare and fine cover, surprisingly much rarer without the Spanish adhesives, this being the earliest recorded usage of this Crown Circle Gi = £ 3'750.     British Post Office 1863: Cover from Cairo to Sheffield prepaid with "6d." in red manuscript, struck with typically over-inked "♚  / PAID AT CAIRO" in red (or an over-use of the linseed oil in the ink make-up) with single ring despatch cds (Dec. 10) in blue at left. Reverse with repaired flap fault and Sheffield (Dec. 23) arrival cds.     British Post Office 1872: Envelope from Lagos to Manchester prepaid with "5d." in red manuscript, struck with fine "♚  / PAID AT LAGOS" in black with single ring LAGOS despatch cds (July 18) above. "Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet" cds in red (Aug. 14) also on obverse with Manchester arrival (same day) on reverse. Flap missing and slight soiling but a rare fine strike. The LAGOS Crowned Circle handstamp was in use for less than eight month only. Cert. BPA (1960) Gi = £ 4'000.
