Unfranked double letter = 50 kreuzer, less the paid amount of 60 lepta = 22 kreuzer, thus 28 kr. to pay upon receipt. The cover with overall aging and imperfections but most unusual. Manuscript '3/15' on front (3 kr. for port fee in Trieste + 15 kr. for Lloyd ship rate) in blue ink on front and '75' in red crayon for the lepta amount to pay. Reverse with Athens cds (Oct 19, julian) and Calamata cds of receipt (Oct 22). A superb and extremely rare four colour Paris printing cover in brilliant condition, used in the first weeks of issue. Franked on arrival with 1862/67 5 l. green, 10 l. deep orange on very blued paper and 20 l. blue on bluish all tied by 'Kerkyra' datestamps (Aug 11, julian). An interesting method of adjusting the amount due with the original franking taken into consideration (10 kr. = 30 lepta, charged due 35 lepta for missing 5 kr. = 15 lepta), plus internal postage of 20 lepta. Slitted for disinfection on arrival in Corfu against Cholera. A few imperfections including vertical file fold through 20 lepta but a generally fine and extremely rare cover. Reverse with Marseille cds (Feb 3) and thence placed aboard the Paquebot 'Neva' bound for Greece, the cover arriving in Athens (Jan 31, julian). Marked '432' lepta in red crayon and therefore taxed at 3½ times the French rate of 112 lepta + double the internal 20 lepta rate with 1861/62 2 l. pale brown on yellowish, 1862/67 10 l. orange on greenish, 20 l. blue and a remarkable horizontal strip of five 80 l. carmine, all tied by Athens cds's (Jan 31, julian).     Underpaid Mail from French Levant to Greece 1867: Entire letter from the Ottoman Bank in Constantinople, mailed on board the 'Menzaleh' Steamer to Athens, franked by France 1862 40 c. orange, tied on despatch by Anchor dotted lozenge with octagonal CONSTANTINOPLE / P. FR. U. No. 3 datestamp (Sept 25) in black (Salles fig. 882). Struck with framed AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT in black and with manuscript '50' (lepta) in red crayon to pay: charged at 30 lepta ship fee plus 20 lepta for internal postage (thus taking no account of the 40 centimes prepaid).  Franked by 1862/67 10 c. orange and 40 l. mauve on blued tied by 'Athens' cds (Sept 15, julian). A wonderful, superbly attractive and very rare entire. Illustrated in 'Les Tarifs Helléniques' on page 125.

    Mail from Prussia via Austria and Austrian Lloyd 1861: Cover from Grossneuhausen, Grand Duchy Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, sent unpaid to Athens (addressed to the Prussian Minister, Baron de Werther), with manuscript '15/15' in blue ink on front (15 kr. to Trieste + 15 kr. Lloyd ship rate) underneath delightful franking of 1861 Paris printing 10 l. orange on blued, 20 l. blue on bluish and 80 l. carmine on rose all tied by dotted '1' numeral of Athens. Reverse with Weimar cds, Triest cds of transit (Nov 2) and Athens arrival cds (Oct 26, julian). Rated at 30 kr. = 90 lepta + 20 lepta internal charge. The adhesives with large to imperceptibly touched margins but a delightful and rare first issue franking in the first month of use and almost certainly the earliest recorded cover from the Austro-German Postal Union (GAPU) bearing the Greek first issue.     Mail from the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg via Austria and Austria Lloyd 1862: Entire letter from Ronneburg, Saxony-Altenburg to Syros, Greece forwarded privately to Trieste, where mailed unpaid with 'Triest' cds (Feb 7) in black and manuscript '3/15' rate marking in blue ink applied (3 kr. local rate + 15 kr. Lloyd ship fee); franked on arrival with remarkable usage of 1861 Paris printing 20 l. blue in a horizontal strip of three, overlapped by First Athens printing 5 l. deep yellow green on greenish in a vertical strip of three, closed tear, all tied by dotted '67' numeral in black. Rubbed '75' (lepta) in manuscript red crayon on front (rate of 18 kr. = 55 lepta + 20 lepta for internal delivery) and reverse with Syros cds (Feb 2, julian) of receipt. Prepaid on despatch and struck with W.FR.20 handstamp in red at Trieste (Van der Linden fig. 2992B) and reverse with corresponding manuscript '15/15/20'' in red crayon: 15 kr. ship fee, 15 kr. Framed PD in black and thence via Paquebot 'Nil' to Marseille with entry marking in red (Sept 25, gregorian). London arrival cds (Sept 27) in red also on obverse of a fine and scarce entire at pre-Convention (1868) rate. Reverse with Liverpool arrival cds (Feb 10, gregorian). Minor edge wear to envelope but a fresh and fine cover carried under the Greek / GB Convention that came into force on January 1 / Jan 13, 1870. A fine and very rare cover. Illustrated in 'Les Tarifs Helléniques' on page 140.rnrnNote: A strange anomaly in rates: the 1867 cover above charged 220 lepta via Marseilles for a letter up to 15 grams. However, if sent via Brindisi the same letter would have been charged 90 lepta for a letter up to 10 grams. The second route was, therefore used more frequently.
