    1861/1997: Fine four volume collection, in the main numbers nearly complete and from 1863 onwards unused or unused mint, including many better sets and values starting with the issues for Sardinia and Naples, 1878 with 2 c. overprinted officials, 1922 Congresso Filatelico, 1923 Manzoni, 1926 S. Francisco 1,25 L. perf. 13 1/2, the airmails issues with 1930 Crociera Transatlantico Balbo, 1933 Crociera Zeppelin, 1933 Tryptich and 1934 Roma-Mogadisio with 'Servicio di Stato' overprint, Espressi, B.L.P (60 c. and 1 L. missing), 1924/25 advertising stamps (eight used), propaganda and military stamps, postage dues with 30 c. on 2 c. (Sass. 19), parcel stamps as well as revenues. Further Repubblica Sociale with 50 L violett (Sass. 500/I), the later issues 1946 parcel stamp of 300 L. lilac brown (Sass. 79) as well as 1961 Gronchi. A very fine collection with many certificates Diena, Sorani and Raybaudi included, viewing recommended. Sassone = high catalogue value.

    Levant. 1870: Small Envelope (opened on three sides), despatched at Aleppo with Turkey 10 pa. lilac in mixed franking with postage due 20 pa. brown-red (perforation partially covered by seal wax), both tied by blue framed Arabic postmark of Alep (Coles & Walker fig. 4) to reverse of cover, paying the journey to Alexandrette where the cover was given to the French P.O. and a 1863 Napoleon laureated 40c. orange (perforation partially covered by seal wax) was added to the front of the cover, cancelled with Gros chiffre "5079" with "Alexandrette Syrie 13 Avril 70" cds, framed "PD" in black and "Paquebots de la Mediteranée" in red alongside, sent to Marseilles with Transit Smyrne (17 Avril) and Marseilles arrival (25 Avril) cds's on reverse. An appealing cover.

    1850: 45 c. slate-blue, type II on hand-made paper in a block of four plus single, all tied by CREMA 7/7 datestamp to fragment of a registered letter with on reverse an additional 30 c. brown, type I on hand-made paper (corner cut away) for the registration, tied by two crossed strikes of one-line RACCOMANDATA. All the stamps were removed for quality control and replaced with hinges in their original positions, the rare block of four is touched at top while the other three margins are good to large. In spite of some minor imperfections (short pre-cut in block of four) an exceptionally rare item. Signed Grioni and Enzo Diena, cert. Dr. Avi (2007) Sassone = EUR 130'000 for a block of four.

    Württemberg. 1836 (11. Mai): Brief von Cincinatti USA nach Muthlangen Württemberg, mit handschriftl. Vermerk "befördert durch den Königl. Württemberg. Generalkonsul in Baltimore / Chr.an Mayer" sowie "befördert durch Ihr ergebenen / Bremen 9. Juli 1836 / Chr. Starke", dort bei der "BREMEN/F. TH.u.TAX.O.P.A./9.Jul" (Feuser Nr. 434-3) aufgegeben. Als Portobrief mit 32 Kr. taxiert (blauer Tintenvermerk) plus Inlandsgebühr 8 Kr. (Rötel) als 40 Kr. Gebühr für den Empfänger. Die Taxierung von '1 f'' (= 60 Kr.) galt vermutlich als Gesamtgebühr für mehrere Briefe. Trotz Alterungsspuren ein interessanter Überseebrief mit zwei Beförderer. Attest van der Linden (1995).

    1911: 50 st. orange brown & black, a magnificent used example with "Centre Inverted" variety, of excellent centering and fresh colour, lightly cancelled by 'Philippopel' datestamp (June 7, 1913 as most known examples are) in black. Superb and an extremely rare stamp. Signed Karaivanoff. Cert. Karaivanoff. (1949) Scott 97a = $ 2'700/Gi. 167a = £ 7'000/Mi = EUR 7'500.

    Note: The error occurred as the bi-coloured stamp was printed first in one colour and then passed through the printer again for the second. The error passed un-noticed for between five to seven years, the first example being discovered only in 1918 by Nicola Kochanov in Sofia. All the known examples are in used condition with just one sheet sold in Plovdiv (Phlippopel). Probably no more than 20 examples exist.

    Württemberg / Krim Krieg 1856 (18. August) : Illustrierter Brief 'Camp of the Foreign Legion Shorncliff, Kent 4 Sept.1855' eines Söldners via Aachen nach "Böblingen 25 8 56", bei Ankunft taxiert in blau. Die Fremdenlegionäre wurden vom Britischen Brigadegeneral Colonel Charles Dickson‚ in Schelstadt/Elsass für den Krieg auf der Krim rekrutiert und in England ausgebildet. Die Legion bestand aus zwei Regimentern mit insgesamt 1600 Mann,  wovon das 1. Regiment gegen das Ende des Kriegs nach Smyrna verschifft wurde, das andere England jedoch nie verliess.

    1782/1832: Lot drei Forwarderbriefe, dabei Brief  (1782) von Reims Frankreich mit handschriftl. Vermerk "sous Couvert de votre très humble Serv. Kolb & Son"  in Strassburg nach Bozen im Tirol, Brief  (1785) von Bordeaux per FA J.F. Muller in Strassburg nach Nürnberg (Befund van der Linden) sowie Brief (1832)  von Amsterdam über den FA J.A. Boker in Köln nach Verviers Belgien.  Der Transport der Briefe in einem verschlossenen Umschlag oder Paket an den Agenten war eine mögliche Massnahme des Absenders um Porto zu sparen.

    1861 (June): Entire letter from Marseille to New Orleans franked by 1853/60 80 c. carmine tied by petit chiffres in black with Marseille cds alongside (June 14); thence to New York with red 'New York Paid 15' datestamp (July 2). The cover could not be forwarded due to the Civil War (Confederate New Orleans did not fall to the Union forces under Farragut until April 1862) and was handstamped on reverse RENVOYÉ EN FRANCE / SANS INDICATION / DE LA CAUSE DE REBUT in blue with handstruck '9' décimes charge marking in red on front. An extraordinary cover and the first example of this handstamp this describer has seen.

Reverse with some docketing and arrival datestamp (Jan 6) in black. A rare early usage of the stamp (3rd day) and cancellation (2nd day).     1849 (April 4): Entire letter from Lezay to Poitiers with front of cover showing LEZAY datestamp of despatch in black and struck in error with handstamped '2' décimes charge marking. The 1849 Cérès 20 c. black on yellowish found to be applied on reverse as a seal to the letter, the Postmaster annulled the '2' handstamp with both black and red impressions of the grill postmark, cancelling the adhesive in red. The stamp with minor closed tear at upper left presumably achieved on opening the letter, otherwise in immaculate condition. A rare and most attractive entire that displays well. Certs. Calves (2008) and Brun (2014).

    1858/59: 2 so. red and 10 so. brown, both type I in mixed franking with 15 so. blue type II, fresh colour and well perf., tied by perfect strikes of "Milano 4 / 3" (1859) cds's to outer letter sheet to Lyon with "P.D." and French entry mark "Autriche Culoz 6 Mars 59" in red alongside.  A fine three-colour franking and an early use of the 15 so. type II just two weeks after issuance.     1937 (Oct 3): The "Ministerium" Miniature Sheet, showing Boris III 2 leva red brown with black imprint at base '3 October 1937'. A fresh and very fine mint example of this rare sheet, slight horizontal bend at base where the sheet was not gummed below the black overprint, this does not affect the frontal appearance of a very rare sheet with full unmounted original gum - a mere 20 examples were printed thus.

    Note: The sheet actually measures 78 x 110 mm., the measurement in Michel being erroneous, for reference see also Corinphila sale 133, June 2002, lot 1402.

    Note: Both Michel and Stanley Gibbons catalogues are erroneous-the size of the impressed stamps are 23 x 37 mm, Karamitsos (Volume III, 2012) correctly describes these complicated issues more thoroughly and accurately.

    Réunion. 1852: Typeset 15 c. black on grey-blue paper, Type 3 of the four types, a magnificent unused example with enormous margins all round. Illustrated on page 40 in the Brun/Chandonson book (2008), and it must be noted from this book that Type 3 is by the far rarest of the four types either mint or used with just 4 unused and 2 used examples known.     1608/09: Venetian "AQ" letter-sheets with the Lion of St. Mark emblem between, the World's First Postal Stationery (pre-dating the 'Cavallino's and the Mulready by over two hundred years), small group of five items with a mint example and four used-all in the first two years of issue, one being dated February 1608. The "AQ" standing for "Acque" was printed at the top of each sheet along with the 1608 statute under which the system operated, with a further surcharge of 4 soldi for posting each letter. This system remained in operation until 1797 and early first year usages can be considered as rarities.
