    First & Second Balkan Wars 1912/13: Collection well written up on leaves with covers/cards (62) showing the Bulgarian and Serbian occupation of Thrace including Bulgarian P.O. in Salonika with card and a May 1914 5 st. green Money Order form additionally franked 15 st. to Bulgarian occupied Cavalla, Occupation of Thrace with range of covers/cards from Cherkez Khoi, Dedeagatch (1), Demirtache (using Ottoman datestamp), Dimotika (3, incl. rare up-rated card to Egypt), Drama, Gumuldjina (2), Lozengrad (4, one stampless with intaglio Lion seals), Serres (2), Svilengrad (5, one registered), Svilengrad Serbian Office (2), Xanthi; mail from the Siege of Adrianople (10, with two cards from Ludovic Naudeau, War Correspondent of Paris Temps', dated from the first day of occupation of Adrianople). Together with a group of unwritten-up cards some mailed in the (small) interim between the two Balkan wars from Thrace from the end of May 1913 (Treaty of London, 30 May), with definitive issue of Bulgaria overprinted to celebrate Victory with usages on card and on registered cover to Canal Zone, Panama; together with a fabulous letter in German dated from Russe on July 13, 1913 concerning the start of the second conflict "The steamer 'Albrecht' arrived today with the Red Cross and leaves today...for 10 days we have had no mail from Europe and no Telegraph connection...The Romanians have already occupied Tutrakhan, Silistria, Dobrich, Balchjik and Varna. Now they are marching alone and undisturbed with a large Army to Cherven Briag, Orhanie and Sophia. The situation is very dangerous". A superb collection with viewing recommended.

    Napoleonic Wars 1797/1805: Correspondence (7 entires), most letters in English, some in French, between a Scot (MacDonald) and a Frenchman (Chevalier du Vau), with 1797 entires (3) written from Dresden, Berlin (on the ladies of Berlin "sans modestie et sans mouchoir") and Leipzig to Weimar in French or English, fascinating 26 June 1804 entire to Leipzig via Hamburg prepaid at "2/4d." in red manuscript with curved "Amstruther" despatch in black "imputing my silence due to the disorder occasioned by this horrid and tedious War" and "Talking of War - I really do not see any prospect of its ceasing between our Nations. We are now in a most powerful posture with an Armed force of upwards of 800'000 men and all of them mad with a desire of trying their strength with the vaunted veterans of Buonaparte"; and the letter goes on to say that 8-12 year olds are forming battalions and that if Bonaparte crossed the Channel he would not advance 50 miles. Entires from Dresden (22 Oct. 1804 and 19 March 1805) to Geneva via Hamburg in English and (8 Sept. 1805) from Vienna to Geneva "for some days everything has changed here and assumed a decidely warlike form". A fascinating group.

Galata and Constantinople machine cancel of arrival (June 14) on reverse, a cover of the utmost rarity, this handstamp was used from May 30 in Tepelene and thus this cover represents the first usage on mail sent overseas.

    Incoming from Italian Post offices in Tunesia 1872 (June 12): Unpaid entire letter from Tunis to Athens, with the despatch date (Tounis, 31 Maios 1872, julian) given in the letter's text, obverse struck by CAGLIARI transit cds (June 13, 72), "Da Tunisi" and "coi Postali Italiani" handstamps alongside, transit cds's of PALERMO and MESSINA (June 16, 72) on reverse. Charged upon arrival with '90' lepta in red crayon, bearing 1862/67 Consecutive Athens printing 10 l. yellow-orange and 80 l. rose-carmine, vivid colours with overall fair to large margins, tied by ATHENS arrival cds (June 8) cds. File fold through the 10 lepta adhesive, also lightly touched at right, nevertheless an interesting cover from an extremely rare provenance for Greece, presumably unique. Cert. Sorani (2007) Hellas 18a+22a.rnNote: With Italian vessels from Tunis to Cagliari and further to Palermo and Messina. There the cover was transfered to a French vessel to Athens.     Outgoing to Great Britain via Trieste 1866 (Nov 6): Prepaid entire letter from Syros to Manchester, bearing Consecutive Athens printing 5 l. green, 10 l. red-orange, two horizontal pairs and 80 l. rose-carmine, fresh with overall good margins, but both pairs lightly touched at top, tied by '67' numeral with matching SYROS cds, PD and PED as well as LONDON transit cds (Nov 27), all in red alongside, reverse with TRIEST transit and MANCHESTER arrival cds (Nov 27) datestamps. File fold aside the franking, an interesting cover with a particular franking paying 20 lepta inland rate plus "10 / 10 / 15" soldi (35 s. = 105 l.) noted in red crayon on reverse with 10 s. for the Lloyd and Austria each and 15 s. for the United Kingdom, this credit noted on front with prominent "WF 14" handstamp in red. Hellas 17a+18a+22a.

    Incoming from Austria 1862: Unpaid cover from Trieste to Calamata, endorsed "Col Vapore", struck by TRIEST despatch (July 19) cds, on arrival charged '75' lepta in red crayon and franked with 1861 Paris Printing 5 l. yellow-green and 40 l. mauve on blue in combination with 1861/62 First Athens printing 10 l. orange and 20 l. blue, a fine four-colour franking with fresh colour and good to large margins, all tied by '31' numeral of Kalmata, reverse with ATHENS transit cds. The Austrian debited the Greek postal administration "3 / 15" soldi in manuscript, for the local Trieste rate and the Lloyd' shipmail, respectively, the resulting 55 lepta plus the 20 lepta inland rate were charged to the receiver. The 10 lepta adhesive with vertical file fold and partially detached, nevertheless an appealing and interesting item. Hellas 3a+6a+12/Ia+13/Ia.

    1850: Sachsendreier bräunlichrot, Platte III Typen 8+9 im waagrechten Paar, auf blauer Drucksachenschleife des National-Vereins für Handel und Gewerbe (rückseitig nicht ganz vollständig), von Leipzig nach Sulau Regierungsbezirk Breslau. Das Paar ist an drei Seiten voll- bis breitrandig, links und unten sowie im Markenzwischenraum sind Schnittlinien sichtbar, dass das bayrische Liniensystem erkennbar wird, oben ist das Paar meist entlang der Randlinie geschnitten, teilweise ist die Randlinie aussen teils minimal berührt, je sehr klar und übergehend entwertet mit Zweikreisstp. "LEIPZIG 11. JAN. 51 5½-6", rechts oben Herkunftsstempel "Aus Sachsen". The franking tied by bold numeral '1' of Copenhagen, despatch "KIOBENHAVN 21 / 6 2-3" cds in black alongside, reverse with "KDOPA HAMBURG 22.6." and "HAMBURG TH&/ 22.6." transit cds's and indistinct arrival cds. Light patina, nevertheless an appealing and interesting cover, the franking paying correctly the 1854 postal rate of 22 skilling from the second Danish to the third GAPU rayon with 9 skilling for Denmark and 13 skilling / 3 silbergroschen for the Postverein, the weiterfranko noted at lower left.     General Balbo Mass Flight 1933 (Aug. 5): Cover from Valentia Island prepared for the intended Balbo return flight 'Valentia Island - Rome', franked with horizontal Seahorse pair of 2/6 s chocolate brown composite setting (T69h) plus additional single value (T59), together with 1d. and 6d. single values, all tied by "Valentia Island Aug. 5 1933" cds's; envelope with crossed out 'AER-Post' special cachet in green, carried by regular mail to Rome and backstamped on arrival (9.VIII.33) on reverse. Few browned perfs, otherwise a fine and very scarce composite setting used on cover dispatched at Valentia Island for the announced Balbo flight. One of the rarest Balbo covers though Longhi 2960 = Euro 4'000 for flight only.rnDue 'bad weather' the return flight had been delayed, so Balbo had to cancel his original plan returning via Valentia Island (Ireland) and choose the more southern route via the Azores back to Rome.

    1855/1860 (ca.) Vier markenlose Briefe aus dem preussischen Hoheitsgebiet nach Belgrad. Es handelt sich dabei um zwei Dienstbriefe, hier entweder mit 'K.d.S.' oder 'Affs de service de Roi', gekennzeichnet stammen beide der sehr seltenen Dienstbriefe aus Berlin, zwei weitere Briefe stammen einmal aus WITTICHENAU, dieser mit 3 Sgr taxiert sowie ein weiterer Brief mit Taxvermerk '9'  ebenfalls aus Berlin. Letzterer Brief ist stärker repariert. Briefe aus Preussen nach Serbien sind nur in einer ganz geringen Zahl registriert und sind selbst ohne Marken sehr rar.     1933, 10 öre ERNST UDET "Rockwell Kent" stamp on cover flown by Ernst Udet from the camp at Igdlorssuit to Umanak. The stamp covers Udet's fee. Expedition's cachet in red "Universal - Dr. Franck, Greenland-Expedition" and with black oval transit mark with crown "KOLONIEN UMANAK" (on front and on back of envelope). At top right is a drawing made by Rockwell Kent. Handed over to Greenland postal administration in Umanak for onward transportation via Copenhagen to Stuttgart. On the reverse is marked S/S "TORDENSKJOLD" to indicate the first available vessel bound for Copenhagen. Oval transit mark with crown "GRÖNLANDS STYRELSE". 40 öre in Danish stamps to cover the transportation from Copenhagen to Stuttgart. Only a few such covers are recorded. Bei der 1 und 4 Centime Marke je ein fehlender Zahn. Französische Zone in den Hauptnummern vollständig, vielfach postfrisch, die gestempelten wohl zweifelhaft. Amerikanische und britische Zone Band und Netzaufdrucke ungefalzt, aber auch ungeprüft.     1866 (9. August): 2l. scarlett, together with horizontal pair 60c. mauve and 40c. rose carmine, London prints, four fresh and fine examples on letter from Palermo via Marseille to New York. The stamps are cancelled by a dotted numeral "186" of Palermo. The letter, a 4th weight rate trans-atlantic letter, was originally weighed and endorsed "3" for third weight rate, but checked in France and found to be underfranked due to the 4th weight rate being applicable. The was "3" crossed and replased by "4" and endorsed 'affr. insuff'. Upon arrival in New York a "PAID ALL" cachet was applied in error and subsequently obliterated by multiple cork cancel strikes.     Pondichery 1872/79: General Issue Cérès 40 c. orange pair folded around edge of cover with, on reverse, further 40 c. orange and 5 c. green pair and used on 1876 mourning envelope to Rochefort-sur-Mer all tied by lozenges of dots with "INDE / PONDICHERY" cds of despatch (Jan 7 - the week France joined the UPU) on obverse. Carried on P&O steamer "Assam" from Galle to Alexandria and the "Travancore" to Brindisi. circular "Col. Fr. V Brind / A Mod" (Jan 29) in red (Salles fig. 1893). The reverse with flap tear but a rare cover, the 90 centimes rate was only in force from January to June 1876 for mail carried by British Packets on the Brindisi route.

The Austrian debited the Greek postal administration "15 / 15" soldi in manuscript, for the Austrian part of the journey and the Lloyd' shipmail, respectively, the resulting 90 lepta plus the 20 lepta inland rate were charged to the receiver. An insurance label "A/ ITALIA/ ROMA/355" is also affixed to the front. In the top left hand corner is an endorsement g588 for the weight and l. 8.45, which is the resulting postal charge. The piece has been cleaned and has a central vertical fold well clear of the franking. The letter is signed Enzo Diena and comes with a certificate "[....]originale e reca francobolli perfetti".     1914/18, 1917(ca.): Brief des Schweizerischen Konsulats in Brüssel in die Schweiz ebenfalls an einen Konsul gerichtet. Der als Feldpost deklarierte Brief wurde ausserhalb des Postsystems der PTV und der Reichspost in die Schweiz beföerdert, da Verzögerungen durch die Zensur in dringlichen Fällen eine Abwicklung unmöglich machten. Im Reichsinteresse agierende Parteien hatten in Ausnahmefällen die Gelegenheit ihre Post über die Kommandantur Brüssel direkt weiterleiten zu lassen. Oct.): 5c deep blue-green (verde azurro scuro) and 5c. blue-green (verde azurro) provisional Government 1859 issue first print, two horizontal pairs, right hand pair with part adjoining stamps at bottom and only just touched on left on entire letter from PARMA to PADUA. The right pair is tied by the PARMA datestamp (22. Oct. 1859). A tax mark has been applied to the front, a transit MILANO (24. Oct.) and an arrival mark PADOVA (25/10) can be found on the reverse.  An immensely beautiful letter of great philatelic importance for the Provisional Government collector, it has been signed by a host of philatelic experts, beginning with Bolaffi, Enzo Diena and others.     Incoming from Austrian Levant Offices 1863 (Jan 5): Partially prepaid cover from Candia to Syra, the Austrian part of the journey pre-paid in cash and noted on reverse with '10' soldi, the cover struck by CANDIA despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 542) in bluish black. Upon arrival charged with '20' lepta in red crayon. Consecutive Athens printing 1862/67 20 l. blue applied and tied by '67' numeral of Syros, matching arrival cds (Dec 25, 1862) on reverse. The adhesive lightly touched at top, nevertheless an interesting and appealing cover with partial prepayment in cash from the period, when Greek adhesives were already in use while the Austrian Levant offices did not yet use adhesives. The letter bears two transit marks, one NEW YORK 5 18 and another CASTRIES REGISTERED, dated 14 JU 46. A US Army Postal Services APO 807 arrival mark completes the documentation of the journey. Due to the content the franking has suffered slightly on the edge, which, given the immense rarity of this letter, should not matter significantly. A jewel in the crown of any Faroer Is collection.

    1854 (15. Jul.) 25c blue, generously margined strip of five as part of a 2f.50c. three colour franking on overseas letter from 'Paris' via 'London' (17. Jul.) and 'Panama' to 'Arequipa' Peru. The franking is exceptionally fresh and contrasts delightfully with the cover, the cancellations and cachets. The additional franking, consisting of a good margined 10c. bistre and three 25c. singles and a 40c all Napoleon, display the odd fault, the strip has a pressed and barely visible filing crease.     1890 (9. Jul.): 10 Pfg. braunrosa (2), sauber entwertet mit Rahmenstempel  "AUS WESTAFRIKA", einmal mit Plattenfehler 'kurzes P' im rechten PF. Der Firmenbrief der Firma Witt und Büsch trägt einen Aufgabevermerk Lagos (9/7 90, 12gr) in roter Tinte und war nach Stettin gerichtet. Laut rückseitigem Ankunftstempel kam der Brief dort am 11. August 1890 an. Ein sehr schöner Brief aus Westafrika, dazu noch mit Plattenfehler. Fotoattest Dr. Steuer (1993).

    1852 (23. Nov.): 5c black on yellow paper, block of six from the left sheet margin on letter with partly erased address from FIURENZUOLA to BOLOGNA. The very rare block is in its original state without any repairs. It has some margin faults and is cut into at the bottom and at the top on the right hand stamp. The stamps are tied by a straight line AFFRANCATA and the FIURENZUOLA double circle in red. The stamps are gently cancelled with the red grid of FIURENZUOLA . On the reverse a BOLOGNA receiving mark in black is dated 25. Nov. This block is one of the largest entities of this stamps on cover. The attractive rarity is signed E. Diena.rnrnrnrn

    1886 (2.Feb.): 10 Pfg. Antwort Ganzsache aus LAGOS, Westafrika, der Wertstempel entwertet mit "Stummem Stempel Lagos", mit nebengesetztem Einkreisstempel Unterscheidungsbuchstabe A. Die Karte mit Bedarfstext lief über Grossbritannien und erhielt Transitstempel von Liverpool (5. März) und London (noch von der Ausreise am 3. Dezember 1885), sowie einen Ankunftstempel München. Zwei erträgliche Eckbüge sind Spuren der Reise nach Afrika und zurück. Ein ausgefallenes Stück, nach dem man sehr lange suchen muss.

    Yanaoun 1862 (Sept 15): Entire letter from YANAOUN, French India, a small French settlement without a Post Office, mailed to Bordeaux, passed to the British Post Office at "INGERAM" with double arc cds in black (Sept 18) on reverse and curved INDIA UNPAID applied. Accountancy marking "GB / 1F 62 4/10" in blue (Salles fig. 3049) and framed INDIA UNPAID struck in Bombay, thence by P&O steamer "Malta" to Suez and "Talazac" from Alexandria to Marseille (Oct 19) and charged by handstruck '9' décimes due. Somewhat aged but a rare entire.

    Österreich: Weltrundfahrt 1929: Freimarke der Ziffernserie 1 S. im waagerechten Paar mit Abart: Mitte ungezähnt, plus Flugpost 10 S. je mit Stempel n "WIEN 12.VIII.29" als portogerechte Frankatur auf Ganzsachen-Formblatt 24 Gr. als Zeppelin-Karte der Rundfahrt mit allen Stempeln inkl.     1850: Entire letter internally dated "Milano 8 Aprile 1856", forwarded and despatched in Trieste to a local address, bearing Carta a mano 10 c. 'nero intenso' type Ib, a fine example with fresh colour and good to huge margins all round, tied by black ink cross. File folds well away from the franking, edges of the entire partially broken, nevertheless a most interesting usage of a stamp of Lombardo - Veneto in Austria on a forwarder entire, delivered locally in Trieste.     1859 (9.Jul.): 5c. black on yellow paper, in mixed franking with 25c.reddish-brown issue 1857. The stamps are used on letter from "PARMA" to "TURIN". They are tied by a clear strike of the "PARMA" barred lozenge. A red arrival "TORINO" (11. Oct.) is applied to the reverse. Due to being stuck close to the edge, the franking shows minor signs of wear, particularly the 5c. black.  A very rare mixed franking of first and third issue. The letter was despatched the day on which Duchessa Maria Luisa II was deposed and the Provisional Government installed. A fabulous letter to display the history of PARMA. Signed E.Diena with certificate (1980).

    Regno, combination usage of Sardinian and Italian adhesives, 1863 (24. Nov.): Sardinia IV. emission 10c. bistre in mixed franking with Italy 5 c. green-grey on letter front from MORAZZONE to VARESE. The stamps are cancelled by single circle MORAZZONE dated 24. Nov. and 25. Nov. respectively. The certificate Diena explains that the second date was that of the actual despatch on the day following the acceptance of the letter.  An exceptional mixed franking, a minor fold arose during affixing the stamp to the letter. Signed by Bolaffi, R.Diena, E. Diena and Bottacchi among others, with certificates E. Diena and Bottachi (1998).

    Bergedorf 1867: ½ resp. EIN HALBER SCHILLING, Auflage von 1867 blau im vollständigen ungebrauchten Originalbogen. Gemäss Fottoattest Jakubek sind nur 3 komplette Bogen bekannt. Der Block ist 'bemerkenswert frisch..', '..einige Marken weisen Falzreste auf', etwa 8-10 Marken sind betroffen, auch weist der Gummi einige Stockpunkte auf. Durch die Zwischenstege verläuft eine vertikale Faltung des Bogens, diese Faltung ist bis in die zweite Markenreihe von unten eingeschnitten/eingetrennt. Shanahan 1959, Mi = ca. € 75'000.
