1866 (9. August): 2l. scarlett, together with horizontal pair 60c. mauve and 40c. rose carmine, London prints, four fresh and fine examples on letter from Palermo via Marseille to New York. The stamps are cancelled by a dotted numeral "186" of Palermo. The letter, a 4th weight rate trans-atlantic letter, was originally weighed and endorsed "3" for third weight rate, but checked in France and found to be underfranked due to the 4th weight rate being applicable. The was "3" crossed and replased by "4" and endorsed 'affr. insuff'. Upon arrival in New York a "PAID ALL" cachet was applied in error and subsequently obliterated by multiple cork cancel strikes. A most collectable letter with a story. Certificate E. Diena (1977).
