A most attractive cover, the franking paying the correct first GPU rate abroad with 30 c. postage and 50 c. registration fee, a late usage of the Siège stamps in the Sage period.

    1870 (Dec 30): Mourning envelope from Blangy du Calvados to a French Prisoner of War in Erfurt, Prussia franked with Bordeaux 20 c. blue type II report 2 with fair to large margins (touched at top left), tied by light '491' Gros Chiffre numeral cancel with BLANCHY DU CALVADOS (30 DEC 70) cds in black and framed PD in red alongside. Reverse with Cherbourg à Paris railway cds and Prussian Ausgabe cds (15 / 1). The cover shows handwritten endorsement "voie de Belgique" and "Port étranger" note pointing to the fact that only the Prussian part of the journey was franked with a stamp while the PD handstamp shows that the postage-free mailing within France to a French POW abroad was accepted by the postal authorities. A very interesting item from the French-Prussian War.

    1872: Entire letter from Remiremont to Pontarlier, forwarded to Couvet in Switzerland, bearing Cérès 1872 25 c. blue type I, tied by Gros Chiffres '3106' numeral lozenge with "REMIREMONT 17 AVRIL 74" cds alongside. Upon arrival the receiver was not found in Pontarlier and the letter was forwarded to neighbouring Couvet on the other side of the French-Swiss border. An additional 1872 5 c. green was added and tied with Gros Chiffre '2964' numeral lozenge of Pontarlier, a framed PD in red was struck alongside. Reverse with ambulant and Pontarlier cds's and Couvet arrival cds (April 18).rnNote: The letter is directed to the Fabricant d'Absinte Fritz Duval (1838-1916). The production of absinthe was an important industry in the Swiss Val de Travers where Couvet is situated. Large parts of the production of the fée verte was exported to France. Its consumption was forbidden in 1908 in Switzerland and in 1915 in France.

    1867: Second sheet of an entire letter from Shanghai to Lyon, bearing Napoléon laureated 80 c. rose 'vif', a fine horizontal pair with fresh colour and good perforation, cancelled centrally by clear Gros Chiffres '5104' numeral obliterator, despatch "SHANG-HAI 8 JUIL. 69 Bau FRANCAIS" cds and framed PD in red alongside. Reverse with Lyon arrival cds's (Aug. 29). An attractive fully prepaid double rate cover from the French Consular PO in Shanghai to France, using either French or British vessels. Signed Amédée Brun.
