    Alexandrette 1853 (Jan 19): Unpaid Entire missionary letter written in Mardin, sent by messenger to Alexandrette and despatched from there to Lyon, struck with superb cursive "Alexandrette" handstamp in black (Pothion = 28 points), framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANEE" in red alongside, reverse with Beirut and Marseille transit as well as Lyon arrival cds's (March 3). Manuscript '10' décimes due had to be paid by the addressee. An early usage of this rare strike, as the post office was not opened earlier than August 1852, an attractive cover. Cert.     Alexandretta 1879 (Oct 21): Envelope at double rate from Tarsus to Aleppo, sent with a messenger to Alexandretta, franked on front with type Sage definitives 25 c. black on red in a vertical pair, tied by decorative type 22 "ALEXANDRETTA SYRIE 21 OCT 79" cds in blue, oval BM in blue alongside, brought with the Turkish post to Aleppo, where Dulos 1876 1 ghrush yellow, a strip of three and a bisected stamp as well as 10 pa. bright lilac (Mi 27+29) were added as postage due to the reverse and tied by all Arabic intaglio handstamp (Coles & Walker fig. 2).     Beirut, Paquebot 1861 (Dec 21): Letter sheet from Beirut to Constantinople with receiver's docketing 'Beyrouth 21 Dec 1861' franked with 1853 Napoléon imperforated 10 c. bistre and vertical pair of 20 c. blue, all in type I, tied by Ancre lozenge, "CARMEL 21 DEC 61" ship cds in black alongside, reverse with Constantinople arrival cds (Jan 4). The cover was underfranked, an "AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT" handstamp was applied and the receiver had to pay '15' décimes. The 10 c. bistre shows a pre-use pinhole at base, file fold well away from the adhesives, a rare and attractive cover at double rate.

The front bears the postal treaty mark "FR / 2f 40c" in black (van der Linden fig. 1266) which shows the postage France got from the United Kingdom for each ounce of weight, the receiver had to pay '1s / 6d'.

    Cleaned Plates Printing 1868/69: 5 l. green in a top sheet marginal vertical strip of four, used on 1870 cover to Syros tied by Thyra cds's (March 4) in black. Taxed with overlapped Athens print 1861 5 l. greyish green, 20 l. blue and 40 l. mauve on blue, three fine singles with vivid colour and large to enormous margins, tied with '1' numeral of Athens. Greek PED handstamp in green-blue alongside. Marginal fold and nick to multiple originally applied over the edge of the cover, re-folded and archival fold, but an attractive usage to cover the GPU rate of 30 lepta Hellas 40d.
