1847 (July 7th): Autograph double rate letter with full content written by Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865) to John Lort Stokes, bearing vertical pair of Great Britain 1 d. red-brown on blued, tied by "53" numeral obliterator of Bath, reverse with Bath despatch and Haverfordwest arrival cds's.rnVice Admiral Robert FitzRoy writes to his successor as Captain of the 'Beagle' to congratulate him on his appointment as surveyor of New Zealand: 'Probabely the New Zealand Company now in the ascendant -- and Lord Grey their patron -- have been urging the Admirality to add increased éclat to their colonising operations .. you know as well as anyone how valuable a good survey of those islands would be -- and I know well how much it is required', continuing with an affecionate suggestion that Stokes should accept. 'I am writing to you my dear Stokes -- as a bald headed old man -- not as the once enthusiastic and extravagant Commander of the Beagle'; FritzRoy adds that he himself is now seeking a more active role, and comments on Grey's likely reaction, that 'he will be disappointed and thwarted by late arrangements .. that he will retire with flying colours'.rnStokes served with FitzRoy accompanied by Charles Darwin in 1831 when HMS Beagle was surveying the Falklands and the east coast of South America. In 1841, Stokes suceeded Wickam in the command of HMS Beagle whilst surveying the Sewan River and part of the north coast of Australia, returning to England in 1843. From 1847 to 1853 Captain Stokes made a detailed survey of the west coast of New Zealand in command of HMS Acheron.rnFitzRoy's service as governor of New Zealand, 1843-1845, was dominated by the land purchase question, in which he was considered to favour the Maori interests too much, and by disputes over his financial policy, which aroused the opposition of the New Zealand Company. rnAn important historic item related to the journeys of the HMS Beagle and the early years of colonialisation of New Zealand.rnrnProvenance: Travel and Exploration Sale, Christie's (Sept 23, 2004), lot 66.Starting bid : 2,500 CHFHammer price : 2,500 CHFLot# : 502 Palestine

Provisional Issue 1861 (April 12): Woodblock 4 d. (deep) bright blue on laid paper (Gi 14c, BPA cert. 1990) or Woodblock 4 d. blue on laid paper (Gi 14d, cert. RPSL (2019), an unused example with large margins all round and close but well clear at lower right, of fine impression (almost over-inked) and in an astonishing rich colour, tiny thin spot on the top of 'G' of GOOD mentioned for absolute accuracy and not impinging on the appearance in any way; fresh and very fine, unused without gum.rnrnThis example originally turned up in a general collection in the early 1960's, found by Robin Taylor of London & Brighton Auctions which he ran with Ted Proud, it remained in his estate until 1990. The BPA certificate issued in 1990 states "deep bright blue" Gi 14c = £ 120'000. However, when sold in our 2019 auction with this description, the stamp was then submitted by Corinphila on behalf of the buyer to the Royal Philatelic Society in London who issued a certificate (September, 2019) stating 'blue' Gi 14d = £ 32'000 and thus also a very rare stamp in unused condition and stating 'light surface soiling' which is imperceptible even under magnification. Neither certificate mentions the minute thin spot on the top of the 'G' referred to in our original description. The stamp is therefore, with our thanks to the owner, re-offered on its merits, with both the conflicting certificates which can be seen on our internet site.Starting bid : 10,000 CHFHammer price : 18,000 CHFLot# : 517 Cape of Good Hope

Recess by Bradbury Wilkinson, perf. 14, 14½ 1878/80: 4 d. sage-green (lower marginal example) and 6 d. olive-black, used on 1881 cover originally mailed as an Officer's Letter to Ireland with manuscript endorsement "No Stamps Available" at top, the adhesives applied at Standerton by the messenger who carried the letter, and tied by STANDERTON / TRANSVAAL cds (June 27) in black. Reverse with Durban transit cds (July 2) and 'H&K Packet' cds (Aug 4). Cover #130 in the Jorgensen census. A superb and most unusual cover.rnNote: The cover is with full contents and written between 17 and 25 June 1881 by Captain Charles Frederick Cobbe Beresford of the Royal Engineers en route from Potchefstroom to Newcastle. Begun at Loop Spruit on the 17th he states "We are (on) the first stage of our march back from Potchefstroom, bag and baggage. The whole thing is the most ignominious farce... The fort and trenches the English held outside the town were very interesting, they made a capital defence and one of the most active was the lady wife of one of the Officers - they were surrounded on all sides by Boer trenches and under fire night and day and reduced to one bag of mealies when they gave in to the villain Cronje who never told them peace was (already) made...". He goes on to report of hunting buck and the appalling treatment of the bullocks used to pull the wagons.rnrnProvenance: Collection Dr. Alan Drysdall, Spink, London, 1 March 2006, lot 1309 (contrary to Spink's description, not ex the David Crocker collection).Starting bid : 500 CHFHammer price : 2,600 CHFLot# : 542 Transvaal
Recess by Bradbury Wilkinson, perf. 14, 14½ 1878/80: 6 d. olive-black, single example used on 1879 Soldier's Letter to Ironbridge, Shropshire, endorsed "From No. 19/200 Corporal J.J. Bailey, H.M. 80th Regiment" (Staffordshire Volunteers) and countersigned by Commanding Officer at lower left; the adhesive tied by "11" numeral in black applied in Utrecht (as attributed by Dr. Drysdall). Reverse with Durban transit cds (Nov 14) and Ironbridge arrival (Dec 28). The cover (from a correspondence of 8 letters, most of which were franked by Natal adhesives from Zululand, ex Robson collection) with a few small opening tears but very scarce: it is unclear why Corporal Bailey chose a 6d. adhesive when a 1d. would have sufficed. rnNote: The 80th fought at the British defeats at both Isandhlwana and Itombi River.Starting bid : 250 CHFHammer price : 380 CHFLot# : 543 Transvaal

1859: Official cover and complete original contents from the Admiralty Office in London addressed to "Dr. Livingstone, Zambesi Expedition, Central Africa" and endorsed "Admiralty 19 Nov, 1859" at lower left and "To be forwarded by first opportunity" at top, written by Admiral Washington who was supervising the construction of the "Pioneer" steamer for Livingstone's use. This letter further states "I hope this (the "Pioneer") will leave England on April 1...and she will arrive in Tete". It is probable this letter was received by Dr. Livingstone in Tete or at Quelimane. Some staining as to be expected but a rare cover to this extraordinary expedition, one result of this trip being the later publication of "Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries" where he first recounted the use of quinine to combat Malaria.rnNote :The letter mentions that the proposed vessel would be 100 feet in length with a 14 ft. beam and a draft of just 3 foot with a guaranteed speed of 10 knots. The "Pioneer" eventually arrived from England on 31 January 1861 but the draft of 3 feet, perfect for river use was increased to 5 feet in order for the vessel to arrive by sea: thus she was not quite the vessel required when delivered.rnrnProvenance: Collection John Michael.Starting bid : 3,000 CHFHammer price : 6,000 CHFLot# : 559 Rhodesia
