Tangier International Zone 1927 (April 29): ½ d. green, wmk. Block Cypher, eight examples affixed to the sheetlet bearing Essays of the TANGIER surcharge, with "Specimen No. 1" through "No. 4" showing four different sizes of the overprint (the final choice made and issued was in favour of overprint No. 3, Gibbons type 26), each stamp also overprinted SPECIMEN in black (Samuel type GB23). Unusually the Types 3 and 4 are overprinted on vertical pairs of the ½ d. The sheet handstamped at base with circular 'STAMPING DEPARTMENT / PRINTING BRANCH' and dated '20 JAN. 1927' in violet, together with a letter on 'Administracion Internacional de la Zona de Tánger' headed paper addressed to the Director of the 'Poste Anglaise' in Tangier dated November 8, 1926 stating that it is the wish of the Propaganda and Tourist Department that the British stamps are surcharged 'Tanger' for use in the local Post Offices. 1857 (May 26): Embossed 6 d. green, a used example with enormous even margins all round and of superb fresh colour, tied to 1858 cover from Pietermaritzburg to Thomas Maclear at the Observatory in Cape Town, by oval 'POST OFFICE / P.M.BURG' handstamp in black. Reverse with 'Cape Town / Cape of Good Hope' arrival (Aug 6) in red. A truly magnificent cover in the foremost quality for a first issue usage. Cert. RPSL (1987).rnrnNote: Sir Thomas Maclear (1794-1879) arrived in the Cape in 1834 and became the Queen's astronomer at the Cape. Prior to this he had worked with John Herschel and was later to become a friend and colleague of David Livingstone. 1 / 11857 (January): Richardson printing, 1 d. dull orange on white paper, wmk. Large Star, the famous "Dwarf" print, with complete watermark and large margins on three sides and trace of right hand margin at upper right, small thin mentioned for accuracy, the design measuring 18 mm. x 18 mm. (against 19 mm. x 25.5 mm. for the 'normal' stamp), this extraordinarily crushed but complete example was probably caused by an interruption in the printing process. The stamp is cancelled by the oval "NSW" New South Wales duplex in black (introduced in 1858), as is the only other example recorded, presently in the Tapling Collection in the British Library in London, an enlarged colour copy of which accompanies the lot. The Tapling example is in the same shade and both stamps probably emanated from the same cover and were later plated by Grace Gordon Kaye as coming from Row 15, positions 1 and 2. Unique in private hands and one of the most famous of all Classic Stamp varieties and the most famous stamp of New Zealand. Cert. 1864/71: 1 d. carmine-vermilion, single example with a few perf. imperfections, used on 1866 Soldier's concessionary rate cover with complete contents (written from Camp Opanako on July 22), mailed from New Plymouth to Nailsworth, Gloucester tied by numeral "9" obliterator with NEW PLYMOUTH despatch cds (July 30) alongside. Endorsed at top 'From No. 658, Private James Penley, 50th Regiment' and counter-signed correctly at lower left by Captain R.H.P Doran commanding. Reverse with 'Stroud' arrival cds (Oct 21) in black. An extraordinary pair of covers from the 2nd.
