    1806 (June 25): Napoleonic War, an entire letter from 'Isle de France' (Mauritius) to Bordeaux, avoiding the British Continental blockade and struck with superb "ESPAGNE / PAR BAYONNE" entry marking in black and charged '12' décimes due upon arrival. The letter was probably originally landed at Santander or Bilbao and carried overland to Bayonne (rate 10 sols / 5 décimes) for transfer to the French postal system to Bordeaux (rate 7 décimes).

    1809 (Feb 1): Napoleonic War, an entire letter from Port Louis to Annot, Castelane, Basses Alpes, landed in Spain and struck with SANTANDER / MONTANAC handstamp in black and entering France with "ESPAGNE / PAR BAYONNE" entry marking in black and charged '14' décimes due upon arrival (Santander to Bayonne 10 sols = 5 décimes + Bayonne to Annot (930 kms. = 9 décimes. Slight acid ink fault on front but an easy to read and interesting entire.

    1816 (Nov 5): Entire letter from Port Louis to Draguignan, France struck with oval framed "POST PAID / PORT LOUIS" in black. Carried via the Cape and carried on the "Deux Nanettes" with fair COLONIES PAR BORDEAUX in black. The entire reports on the devastating fire that struck Port Louis on the night of Sepotember 26, 1816 and besides the fascinating content shows a superb strike of this rare Port Louis marking.

Carried by a Naval vessel via the Cape with arrrival in red (March 21, 1817) and rated at "9/4 d." in manuscript on arrival (not including the Scottish 'Wheel Tax' Additional ½ d.) with a Packet rate of 7 s. for a double letter, plus double inland rate from London to Perth of 2/4 d. to pay. Backstamped at Aberfeldy. A rare entire.

    1852 (Nov 11): Entire letter from Mauritius to London endorsed "Pr. Australian", carried on the first Northbound voyage of Australian Royal Mail Steam Navigation Co. steamer. The steamer had left Sydney on Sept 20, and after bad weather passed King George's Sound on Octover 19. The need for repairs and coal required a diversion to Mauritius and the mails were landed at Plymouth on Jan 11, 1853 (journey time 114 days). Reverse with London arrival of the follwoing day and charged 2 s. to pay in manuscript.

Carried by the vessel "Chocolate Girl" under the annual contract with the Mauritian Government. A very rare usage from this small island - in 1843 the population was just 250 people.

Superb strike of oval framed "PACKET LETTER / MAURITIUS" in black (May 16) of arrival. The "Mauritius" was a ship of the General Screw Shipping Co., whose service ran from Plymouth via the Cape to Mauritius.rnNote: In 1850 the company secured the contract to carry the monthly mail between Plymouth and Cape Town for £ 30,000 a year.rnFollowing this, orders were placed with C.J. Mare and Company at Leamouth, London for new ships Queen of the South, Lady Jocelyn, Indiana, Calcutta, Mauritius and Hydaspes. In May 1852 an additional mail contract was secured, for the company to provide a monthly service between England and Madras and Calcutta, via Cape St. Vincent, Ascension Island, St. Helena, Cape Town, Mauritius and Ceylon.
