    1840 (Jan 14): Prepaid entire letter headed 'Geelong, Port Philip, New South Wales', from Benjamin Hurst to the Wesleyan Missionary Society in London endorsed 'first ship'; struck with framed "MELBOURNE / PAID" in red (and manuscript '3d.' alongside in red ink) with circular "MELBOURNE / NSW" handstamp in black displaying well on flap. Struck on arrival with two line "INDIA LETTER / DARTMOUITH" in red (Robertson In3 - in use for less than two years) with London cds (July 25) in red, charged '8d.' due for incoming Ship Letter in manuscript. A superb and rare entire - the earliest recorded letter from Geelong whose Post Office had yet to open.rnNote: The writer, Benjamin Hurst, arrived at Geelong in 1838.     1841 (July 21): Prepaid entire letter headed 'Bunting Dale, Geelong, Port Philip, New South Wales', written by Benjamin Hurst to Rochdale, Lancashire struck with framed "PAID AT / GEELONG" in red with reverse showing oval "GEELONG / ♛ / NEW S. WALES" in black and MELBOURNE example of the same type also in black, each displaying well on flaps. London straight line "SHIP LETTER" in black on obverse and charged '8d.' due in manuscript for incoming Ship Letter. Sensible flap strengthening and interesting note from contents "(Your) letter I presume did not reach me sooner in consequence of it being addressed to South Australia instead of New South Wales". The Geelong Post Office opened in 1840. A superb and rare entire.rnNote: The writer, Benjamin Hurst, arrived at Geelong in 1838.     1859: Entire letter addressed from Kilmore (Nov 5) to 'The Sheriff of Victoria' endorsed "per Cobb's coach" and bold manuscript "2/6d. Paid" at left, the contents relating to Jury service in the Supreme Court. Being urgent the letter was sent by Courier without waiting for the Mail. The 2 s.6 d. prepaid the Parcel charge compared with 4d. for normal postage, and as there is no Melbourne arrival it must be presumed the service included delivery directly to the recipient. Despite the Postal monopoly and the suppression of Gold Field Express services, private companies were permitted to carry Parcels. By paying the Parcel fee, 7½ times the letter rate, a letter could be carried outside the Postal system. Rare.rn

Handstamped '1d.' in red for Colonial credit. Struck on arrival with oval framed "ADVERTISED UNCLAIMED / GEELONG" and oval un-framed "ADVERTISED / AND / UNCLAIMED" both in black. Reverse with Exeter cds, London transit and "SHIP LETTER / FREE / GEELONG VICTORIA" in red oval Geelong daatestamp (March 31) of arrival in black.     Incoming Mail 1856: Cover probably from England with manuscript prepaid rate of "2/-", endorsed at top "p. Gaston & Felice" with this erased and replaced by "Via Mauritius", mailed to care of the Post Office in Melbourne "until called for", struck in transit with "♚ / MAURITIUS / GPO" datestamp (Jan 22) in black. Struck on arrival with superb "34 / V" Butterfly handstamp in red - this originally supplied to Border Post, renamed Lindsay on 1 January 1854 and closed on 31 Dec 1854. The handstamp was then returned to the GPO in Melbourne and this cover apparently shows the sole known usage of this handstamp (ref. Purves). Reverse with "SHIP LETTER / FREE / GPO VICTORIA" in red (March 1) and manuscript notation "Forwarded by Lemere & Co." in red ink. A most unusual and interesting cover.rnProvenance: Collection J.R.W.     Lithographed by Thomas Ham 1850 (Jan 3): 1 d. orange-vermilion, First State of the Die, a very fine used example, type f, with large margins for this elusive issue, lightly cancelled by Butterfly handstamp in black. Trace of thin at top but an immensely rare stamp, issued on January 3, 1850, this first Stone was already being retouched in mid-January after a printing of just 9'600 stamps. Very few are now extant, presumed to be in the region of 150 examples, this being extremely fine for this rarity. Cert.     Typographed from Woodblocks by Samuel Calvert 1854/55: Woodblock 6 d. dull orange, a used example with variety "Private Pin Perforation 10" clearly seen at vertical sides, the horizontal apparently scissor cut, tied to 1856 cover to London endorsed "pr. Earl of Sefton". The adhesive, utilised some 18 months prior to Calvert's Official experiments in perforation, is tied by barred numeral "1" of Melbourne. "AUSTRALIAN / PACKET / PAID / LIVERPOOL" cds in red (July 16) and handstruck "5" (pence) credit in red. Reverse with Melbourne despatch (April). Illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on page 93. Some negligible soiling but a most unusual and important cover. Cert.     Queen on Throne 1854/56: 'Queen on Throne' Perkins Bacon sunken Die Proof (61 x 74 mm.), similar to the central vignette of the 1 d. value, with VICTORIA inscribed on lower step and laurel leaf surround, printed in black on thick paper. The design was based on a watercolour drawing by Edward Henry Corbould. Scarce and most appealing, almost identical to the Die Proof offered (lot 2068) in the first Purves sale.     Booklet 1904/09: £1 Booklet (158 x 167 mm.) with blue on pale pink cover and illustration of General Post Office Sydney on reverse, containing two sheets of 120 Victoria 1 d. bright rose, wmk.
