Apparently accepted as full payment with 'Melbourne' cds in red on reverse (Jan 14, 1861) and large part oval MISSENT TO / VICTORIA / MELBOURNE GPO handstamp in red on obverse. 'Ship Letter / Sydney' arrival (Jan 21) in black. A most unusual destination and an attractive cover.

    1877 (March 17): Great Britain 1876 4 d. vermilion pl. 15, a horizontal pair used on 1877 mourning envelope from Malta to Basil Hall Chamberlain in Yokohama, Japan tied by horizontal "MALTA / A25" duplex (March 17) Carried on the P&O Steamer 'Zambesi' and struck unusually on obverse with circular HONG-KONG / SINGAPORE TO HONG KONG / MARINE SORTER datestamp (Proud D6) in black (April 23). From Hong Kong carried on the 'Malacca' with British P.O. 'Yokohama' arrival cds. Reverse with near complete Malta Government red wax seal and London arrival (July 17) in red. Reverse with Genova arrival cds (Dec 26). A lovely entire of great rarity.

    1860 (July 7): Cover to Drummond & Co. in Charing Cross, London, struck on reverse with four line italic instructional marking "Posted unpaid and opened / in due course, but having / originated out of Malta / forwarded charged with fine" in black. Malta single ring cds (July 7) and London arrival cds (July 12) in red, the cover being charged '6' pence in manuscript. The sole recorded cover from Malta with this marking and mentioned in the Malta handbook. See Parmenter & Gordon page 1/17. The cover is "twinned" with the Proof strike of the same marking beautifully struck in red on horizontally creased piece of paper (95 x 50 mm.). A wonderful pairing with both unique and of the utmost importance for both Maltese and Mediterranean Postal Historians.rnCover Provenance: Collection E.E. Large Crown, perf. 14, a vertical strip of three rather muddily tied to Sailor's Concessionary rate cover from Malta to London by Mailboat "A81" obliterator ("Handed to Mr. Douglas for use on board, 18 March 1859") endorsed at top "From Hy Humber, Ship's Corpl. HMS Caesar, Malta" and counter-signed by Commanding Officer below. Carried back on the P&O Steamer 'Vectis' which left Malta on December 9 and arrived at Marseille on Dec 13; (rated at 3 d. pr ¼ ounce via Marseilles) with 'London / Paid' arrival cds (Dec 15) in red.     1857 (Sept 10): Great Britain 1857 1 d. rose-red, perf. 14, a used horizontal pair on 1857 entire letter from Gibraltar to Genova endorsed 'Tiber', tied by two strikes of the "G" in bars obliterator with double arc GIBRALTAR datestamp below (Sept 10). Red 'VIA / DI MARE / (E)' of arrival and originally charged '3' but deleted and changed to "15 cmi." in black. Genova arrival in red on reverse of a very rare entire - used in the first week of the "G" obliterator (the first recorded date of use is September 7) and the second earliest cover used in a British Colony with stamps directly supplied from Great Britain.     1858 (Dec 22): Combination cover, Great Britain 1855 2 d. blue, pl. 6, a used example on cover from Gibraltar with Carver Brothers cachet at left, mailed to Cadiz (MacPherson correspondence) endorsed 'per San Fernando' tied by "G" in bars obliterator with single ring GIBRALTAR cds below (Dec 22) in blue and Spain April 1856 4 cs. rose (Michel 40) alongside and pen-cancelled paying for onward transmission. Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (Dec 23). A fine and rare combination usage.rnNote: One June 14, 1856, the Spanish Postmaster in San Roque informed Edmund Cresswell Jr., the Postmaster in Gibraltar that in future all mail addressed to destinations within Spain would have to be prepaid by Spanish stamps (the 2 d.     1873 (Feb 26): Combination cover originally mailed from London as an enclosure, mailed with Great Britain 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 141, two examples used on cover to Cadiz (MacPherson correspondence) tied by blurred "A26" obliterator with GIBRALTAR datestamp at left (March 5) in black and paying the Ship Letter fee, Spain January 1873 10 c. ultramarine perf. 14 (Michel 122) tied by diamond mute obliterator in black. Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (March 6).     1872 (June 6): Envelope from Lagos to Manchester endorsed 'Per Steamer Biafra', prepaid '5' (pence) in red crayon manuscript, struck with very fine "♚ / PAID / AT / LAGOS" in black with single ring LAGOS despatch cds alongside (June 6, code B). Circular erroneously set "PAID / LIVERPOOL / 3 PACKET / BR. JY 72 / 3A" datestamp in red on obverse and Manchester arrival (July 3) on reverse.     Mailboat Obliterations / Atlantic Packets 1860/63: Nova Scotia 5 c. blue on blued and 12½ c. black used 1867 cover from Halifax to a Captain of a Frigate at Cherbourg, France; each tied by Mailboat "A95" obliterator ("Mr. Nash, Marine Packet Service, Atlantic Line") and mailed on the Cunard Line 'Africa' with circular 'PD' and 'London / Paid' cds of transit (June 17) in red and thence via Calais to destination (June 18).     Mail Boat Obliterations / Pacific Station 1865 (July 28): Cover franked by Great Britain 1862 4 d. red, hairlines, used with New South Wales 1870/72 6 d. violet perf. 13, on cover initialled by sender 'CSF' at lower left (Cecil G. Savile Foljambe) endorsed 'via Marseilles' to the Viscountess Milton in Worksop, with imprinted "HMS Curacoa" crest on reverse of envelope, each stamp tied by bold strikes of the Mailboat "B56" obliterator in black. Reverse with Worksop arrival cds's (Nov 11). Fortunately the British Museum has the original correspondence and this confirms this letter was written on board the "HMS Curacao" whilst it was in Ovalau, Fiji on July 28, 1865 and mailed in the New Hebrides on August 8, 1865, the ship returning to Sydney on October 13. Copy of the original letter enclosed with the lot.rnA magnificent and extremely attractive combination cover. Unique in every respect.rnrnNote: The writer, Cecil G. Savile Foljambe (1846-1907), joined the Royal Navy in 1861 retiring from same in 1870. He later became MP for North Nottinghamshire from 1880-1885.rn

Nyanza' at Zanzibar to Lady Scott Douglas in Edinburgh, tied by three bold strikes of the "BRITISH / P.O. / ZANZIBAR / B" in rectangle of bars duplex in black (Aug 23). Reverse with ADEN cds (Sept 2) and Edinburgh arrival cds (Sept 16).
