From Hong Kong carried on the 'Malacca' with British P.O. 'Yokohama' arrival cds. 1860 (July 7): Cover to Drummond & Co. in Charing Cross, London, struck on reverse with four line italic instructional marking "Posted unpaid and opened / in due course, but having / originated out of Malta / forwarded charged with fine" in black. Malta single ring cds (July 7) and London arrival cds (July 12) in red, the cover being charged '6' pence in manuscript. The sole recorded cover from Malta with this marking and mentioned in the Malta handbook. See Parmenter & Gordon page 1/17. The cover is "twinned" with the Proof strike of the same marking beautifully struck in red on horizontally creased piece of paper (95 x 50 mm.). Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (Dec 23). A fine and rare combination usage.rnNote: One June 14, 1856, the Spanish Postmaster in San Roque informed Edmund Cresswell Jr., the Postmaster in Gibraltar that in future all mail addressed to destinations within Spain would have to be prepaid by Spanish stamps (the 2 d. 1873 (Feb 26): Combination cover originally mailed from London as an enclosure, mailed with Great Britain 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 141, two examples used on cover to Cadiz (MacPherson correspondence) tied by blurred "A26" obliterator with GIBRALTAR datestamp at left (March 5) in black and paying the Ship Letter fee, Spain January 1873 10 c. ultramarine perf. 14 (Michel 122) tied by diamond mute obliterator in black. Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (March 6). Circular erroneously set "PAID / LIVERPOOL / 3 PACKET / BR. JY 72 / 3A" datestamp in red on obverse and Manchester arrival (July 3) on reverse. Mailboat Obliterations / Atlantic Packets 1860/63: Nova Scotia 5 c. blue on blued and 12½ c. black used 1867 cover from Halifax to a Captain of a Frigate at Cherbourg, France; each tied by Mailboat "A95" obliterator ("Mr. Nash, Marine Packet Service, Atlantic Line") and mailed on the Cunard Line 'Africa' with circular 'PD' and 'London / Paid' cds of transit (June 17) in red and thence via Calais to destination (June 18). Manuscript '7' being the British credit. A dramatic and lovely cover. Mail Boat Obliterations / Pacific Station 1865 (July 28): Cover franked by Great Britain 1862 4 d. red, hairlines, used with New South Wales 1870/72 6 d. violet perf. 13, on cover initialled by sender 'CSF' at lower left (Cecil G. Savile Foljambe) endorsed 'via Marseilles' to the Viscountess Milton in Worksop, with imprinted "HMS Curacoa" crest on reverse of envelope, each stamp tied by bold strikes of the Mailboat "B56" obliterator in black. Reverse with Worksop arrival cds's (Nov 11). Fortunately the British Museum has the original correspondence and this confirms this letter was written on board the "HMS Curacao" whilst it was in Ovalau, Fiji on July 28, 1865 and mailed in the New Hebrides on August 8, 1865, the ship returning to Sydney on October 13. Copy of the original letter enclosed with the lot.rnA magnificent and extremely attractive combination cover. Unique in every respect.rnrnNote: The writer, Cecil G. Savile Foljambe (1846-1907), joined the Royal Navy in 1861 retiring from same in 1870. Nyanza' at Zanzibar to Lady Scott Douglas in Edinburgh, tied by three bold strikes of the "BRITISH / P.O. / ZANZIBAR / B" in rectangle of bars duplex in black (Aug 23). Reverse with ADEN cds (Sept 2) and Edinburgh arrival cds (Sept 16).
